Oprah backs out of lapband surgery

Recommended Posts

Did any of you see this article??

IT was in the National Enquirer and I was waiting on line in the supermarket. I never read those traderags....LOL

IT said that she was planning on lapband surgery and was to have the procedure in AZ. I think in Scottsdale at some clinic there. Maybe she read some of the letters I sent about how great the lapband is and how she should have some bandsters on her show...???

So what do you guys think? I say she will do it soon.

Why would oprah want to have surgery? she is perfect the way she is. I find it hard to believe that she was thinking about it.

Nope I don't think she'll ever do it. She will just continue to try and eat healthy and exercise. She has always stated that she "likes food" and never wants to feel restricted in any way. So I don't think she would feel that this is for her.

She looks great anyways!

Hi,

Well first off, she has gained weight and is back up to 197 pounds from her low of 140. THe pictures tell all. This wasnt the kind of article that there was any element of guessing involved since they were able to name the facility. YOu may think the Enquirer is not accurate, but most of the time they are right. This is the cover story and with Oprahs money and her opposition to WLS, if it wasnt true then the Enquirer could easily go out of business since Oprah is presently worth a billion and can get the lawyers on them. I think it really happened. She backed out, but I am willing to bet at least 10 bucks that she has surgery within a year.

You're right. They're always FULL of hard hitting, accurate journalism! And they've NEVER been sued! LOL

National Enquirer!

This is sarcasm folks - humor - not debate!

Yeah, I dont think you can believe anything you read. I mean, Demi Moore has been pregnant in her mid 40's for about 30 months now, Tom is actually the father of Katies baby and Britney is kicking out Kevin!

I don't know...I might believe it. The surgeon she is talking about is most likely the group that gave me my band. I spent over a year researching different docs and i have a great job that lets me live anywhere in the country. Therefore I moved to Arizona just to have my band put in by the docs at Scottsdale Bariatric. They have done surgery on a couple famous people. of course they can't say who. but the "queen of clean", you know the one with all of the books, was in my preop class. but she was having bypass. Anyway, if Oprah was going to get the band then this is where she would get it i bet...it also helps that all of the surgeons are women! No matter what I do think she should do a show about us.

I'm amused by the posts that speculate whether or not a famous person has had weight loss surgery and, if so, what type. My opinion is, who cares? If he/she has decided to reduce their weight by opting for a surgical intervention, more power to him/her.

Well it goes to show that Oprah a mega star and multi-billionaire has struggled her whole life with weight problems. Even though she's in shape now, I see her pictures every few months and her weight yo-yo's too. She's been on the Bohemian Diet, Adkins and a bunch of others before she decided to hire a personal trainer that she pays $100+ per hour of training to run with her, etc. She's doing it the right way but still.. the weight thing is forever. Even though I will change the type of foods I eat, I will not perfectly choose the portion sizes and I may slack off one day from working out but that's a big MAYBE. She's a mega star and she's got alot to do so im pretty sure some days she's all food and no workout. Never really know. But if she does do the band, I hope she'd be a positive advocate.

Babs, what did the rest of the article say as to why she cancelled?

I too saw it as I was checking out and was just able to read the first

few paragraphs about the location and that it was lap band. The headline

on the front is misleading though (big suprize!). Whether she had the surgery or not, just getting the procedure out there in print is great

advertising. Most people that I tell that I have a lap band have never

heard of it.

but as far as her doing it.....well she knows how powerful she influences the media and her audience....so I highly doubt she would take that road....as she would want to be a model and an encouragement for healthy lifestyle changes. And many people might think that the band will do it for them....without putting forth personal efforts.

Take it with a grain of salt.....but it's nice to see the band having some publicity!

warm wishes,

diane

Hi,

Normally, I dont care or believe tabloid crap, however, for years, Oprah has made it very clear that WLS is the easy way out and that she does not support it. She brings guests on her show that have lost lots of weight the hard way and advocates that this is the only way to lose weight. A while ago, I wrote to the Oprah show asking why they dont do a segment on the lapband? Its the ONLY time in my life that I attempted to do this.

The article contends that she was scheduled to have the lapband procedure in AZ and backed out at the last minute because she was afraid of the surgery and didnt go through with it. It was a cover story and it caught my eye.

If Oprah did indeed change her mind about WLS, this would actually be a victory. If a woman who is worth over a billion dollars and has personal trainers and dieticians at her call and beckon cant keep her weight off through diet and exercise, then maybe people will listen to this message and be less judgemental about the folks that take a different road to improve their health with surgical assistance. I dont like people like Dr. Phil who take the moral superiority high road that struggling is the way to go when there ar eother options that are available to help people with their satiety issues.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
