Has anyone here tried 5-htp for controlling the food cravings? My wife has tried it for food craving control and has seen her cravings for sweets reduced. I'm to chicken sh!t to try it.

I have taken 5htp off and on for years and funny you post this because I just started taking it again today. I've never had it curb my appetite..to be honest....I take it to help me with mood balancing.

Why are you chicken to take it? It's fairly harmless, it's close to the stuff in Turkey that makes you sleepy (triptophan). It's a good brain support thing...is a precurser to serotonin which is why it works for some folks on appetite.

The only side effect I've ever had was a headache right at first when I started taking it but that went away.

I usually start with a really low dosage (50 mg) and see how it goes from there.

This of course is only my experience and not intended to advise you one way or the other. You have to make the choices for yourself.

I suggest Googling "side effects of 5htp" and see what you find. Then make your choices from there.

I have used it for PMS. It did not work. My step-dad uses it for appetite control, and he swears by it. Maybe it works better for men... you should try it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
