10 days post surgery - how much should the intake be?

Recommended Posts

I'm posting for my friend. 10 days into surgery...doc asked him to be on liquid diet for 2 weeks and then mashed food diet until 4 weeks. Is there any recommended quantity of intake? what is mashed food? Boil chicken, vegetables and grind/mash it up? Please let me know your experience. Thanks in advance.

Hi Chin and welcome to the forum.

My surgeon recommended starting with about 2 oz. As for mashed food (also called mushies or soft foods) here are some ideas I received from my doctor's office:

Soft food should be the consistency of a thick liquid (no chunks or solid material ) and it should be chewed very well before swallowing until it is a liquid consistency )

Tofu

Low fat cottage cheese

Cereal

oatmeal

Precooked pureed rice

Low fat Yogurt

Yogurt mixed with fruit very well blended

Cream Soups

eggs

Boiled pureed fruit ( example pear, apple )

Watermelon, papaya or melon in small pieces

Boiled pureed vegetables

Beans

I also bake a sweet potato until it's very soft/mushy and eat some of it with a tiny bit of butter.

Hope that helps some - am sure others will have a lot more suggestions too.

Hmm, in my booklet, it says anything that can be blended can be eaten, but you have to make the right choices. But who wants to eat blended pizza anyway, right??? I am going to try things like pureed chili and Beans when I get to that stage, but those probably won't be the first things I try. I'll start off with something like pureed tuna maybe. I can't wait to be off liquids!

Seriously. Can you believe they actually wrote that in the guidelines for pureed foods? I mean, come on. Who's gonna think about putting pizza in a blender, really? Well. My husband did get pizza during my pre-op diet and asked he could blend some for me. But he's a little strange sometimes, lol!

I'm am so looking forward to chicken, tuna, chili, whatever! I'm ready.

Just the thought of pureed pizza makes me sick to my stomach. One of the things I was craving while on liquids was tuna. It was my lunch on day one of mushies.

I ate spaghetti sauce on mushies. Just the ground meat, and the sauce. yummy. Also ground meat with taco sauce and sour cream. yummy again.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
