Help! Sugar free questions - juice, dehydration, etc

Recommended Posts

I'm about six days post-op and I can't really drink Water - I'm really having trouble getting liquids in and my urine is dark.

The spasms are awful when I drink. I'm trying but I'm finding the only thing I can get down is unsweetened juice. I have an instant gag reflex for ANYTHING with artificial sweetener and can't stomach Vitamin water at all, so sugar free popsicles are out. (I've always been that way. Splenda tastes like pure toxicity to me.)

Is there a reason I can't make my own popsicles with unsweetened juice? Or just buy the fruit juice popsicles at Whole Foods?

Can someone explain the need for sugarfree items to me? I get I'm not supposed to be sucking down sugar - but is fruit sugar (like in juice) okay?

I got apple juice in the hospital so I assume it's okay??

My boyfriend just juiced a whole watermelon for me, which is funny because I can probably only take 3 ozs of it.

I don't see why you couldn't make your own popsicles from unsweetened fruit juice. Also, it was suggested to me to make them from plain water, too -- only problem, I couldn't find any popsicle forms to make them with.

If you are having spasms, the best thing to drink are warm things -- I have had spasm since my surgery and still have them today due to a sliding hiatal hernia repair. My doctor tells me it may take up to 6 months for that to dissipate and to try drinking something warm before trying to eat anything and to stay on mushies another 4 weeks.

I hope this helps, some. Know that you are not alone and that it is difficult for many of us to get in our liquids and Proteins.

Good luck - and most important, do not let yourself get dehydrated and it sounds as though that is where you are headed.

All I can tell you is too much sugar will make you feel nauseous. I am not sure how much sugar causes this. I thought it was a lactose intolerance issue but it's not. It's a sugar issue. Sugar makes me dizzy, gives me gas, makes my heart race, and I break out in a cold sweat. They say we don't dump with this surgery, but my daughter had RNY and she said what I describe is just like dumping. Too much sugar dumping into the blood stream causes these issues.

There is a 50% less sugar apple juice that I drank post op and I had no problems with it. It's Motts brand for children.

I would see no problem with it.... I make my own ice cubes and then put them in with Water to flavor it! But ask your doctor....... I am finding that just like the band stuff is way to sweet for me! SO I really need to water stuff down a lot!

Anyone having stomach surgery can have symptoms similar to dumping but it's not dumping, it's a colon spasm. Results are the same but the cause is completely different. It's short lived, it will go away with time.

too bad if it goes away over time. It definitely makes me want to be very careful of eating sugar. Went to a family function yesterday and had dessert and was miserable for hours afterwards.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
