I have a hang-up, appreciate advice

Recommended Posts

Hello all-

I find myself with a mental hang-up I need to get taken care of, so some previous experience would be great.

I am going to be in AZ on vacation for the 2 weeks before I head to MX for my sleeve. So, what I am hung up on is the trip home to VA.

What should I have on my person to make it through the travel? I obviously need Water (I can buy that at the airport) but what about Protein? The hang up I have is getting it through security. The bullets I have here are 3.1 oz (and the security limit is 3oz) and I am uncomfortable taking a self made baggie of powder on the plane. So I guess I need to find someplace that has something I can have in packets?

I don't know why this is causing me such distress, but it really is. So if someone who has been through it could weigh in on this I would really appreciate it.

Dear Blue,

My friend and I just returned from Mexicali and VSG surgery. Truly, the surgery will not be the hardest part.

I am in the tour biz and travel lots of airports so I may be able to help you. I take an EMPTY plastic Water bottle in my check through. Once on the other side of security, I find a Water fountain and fill it up with water & powdered packets of Special K protien H20. As long as you are not carrying an illegal substance, most airlines don't care what you carry (in powdered form) in baggies. PACK LIGHT. Anything over 3oz will be confiscated so put that in a zip lock bag in "check through" luggage or leave it at home.

It will be very difficult to worry about airports, transfers, parking, protien, water, etc on your return home day so don't worry if you aren't "perfect" on travel home day. Do the best you can. Expect your first few days home to be the roughest. Not because of surgery, but mentally. It is common to complain about the "clear liqud phase" and you may feel like it will never end but each day you will begin to feel better and the stress and feeling of deprivation subsides with each passing day. Expect ups and downs. You are in a learning period and most of us muttle our way through it.

The airport is where REALITY hit me like a ton of bricks and I wish I had known this before it happened to me so I could have prepared for it better:

We had a layover (on our way back to Texas) in Las Vegas. Coming off the jetway, the first thing I saw was the CINNABON shop with the smell of warm cinnamon wafting in my face. Next was the pizza shop, Burger King, The warm pretzel stand and an endless line of food options. Every hunger pang and craving went racing through my head and all of a sudden the feeling of deprivation and "what have I done to myself?" flooded my thoughts! The lady sitting next to me asked if I would "watch her pretzel" while she went to the restroom! This was my first experience in the REAL WORLD after bariatric surgery. Life at the hospital was warm and fuzzy and I'm really on my own now! I've heard others talk about HEAD food but I was unprepared for my reactions.

MY ADVICE: Know that the airport my be your first encounter with "Head Food" issues. I chewed some sugar free Clorets gum, walked around, read, drank my Special K water and talked to myself about how I was feeling and dealing with this. Eating fast foods in airports has been a simple pleasure in my life for 18 years of travel. That's never going to be a "priority" ever again for me. Hope this helps!

If you are going to Mexicali, you will LOVE Dr. Aceves and his team.

WHAT??? You were in Las Vegas and didn't let me know? I'm so hurt ... :o:tongue_smilie:

I know exactly how you feel expressing all that hits you at the LV airport ... We drove home and a few of the places we stopped had donuts - my weakness (pastries) and I had a few of the same thoughts as to "what have I done?"

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about having a ton of Protein, as you'll be limited to sipping about 2 oz. every 15 minutes and you may not even feel like that.

Our trip home was about 6 hours and I truly didn't feel all that wonderful. Granted, I didn't prepare very well - and didn't have any Protein with me. We ended up stopping at a Big Boy in Baker and I got some vegetable Soup (mostly broth) and nursed that the rest of the way home. I think if you have a couple SpecialK packets and have acess to Water, you'll be fine on the trip home.

Hard to imagine now, I am sure, that you aren't going to be able to drink a couple of bottles of water; my guess, you'll be lucky to get through even one bottle.

As for Dr. Aceves -- I agree with Size7

This sounds to familiar. I am heading to Hawaii on 7/3 for a week. I have no idea what I will eat while I am on the plane for 8 hours or while I am there. I guess I will hit the grocery store an see what they have to offer. Any advice.:tongue_smilie:

Oh and if some random lady you don't know asks you to "watch her pretzel" give her a look like she asked you to watch her bomb and DON'T DO IT!

Seriously, who would do something like that? That's not normal IMO.

If you order nectar samples from Syntrex, they come in little packages. Beside that, there are plenty of things that come in a box with single servings that you add Water to.

Thanks guys. I knew I would find what I needed here. I am a little gun shy about the flight because the last time I flew I was snowed in in Las Vegas for two days!

So I want to be sure i have what I need with me in case I get stranded, even though it isn't likely I get snowed in in July!

OMG -- that's too funny -- and I can pretty much attest to the fact that it's highly unlikely you'll get snowed in in July -- at least in Las Vegas ... You must have been here in December -- I've lived in Las Vegas for 13 years, it's snowed accumulative snow 4 times with last December being the worst snow "storm" My son lived in Henderson at the time and they actually got 6"!

I can understand your apprehension in flying after that and wanting to be prepared.

Funny thing - the DJs on my radio were just saying this morning if you had to get stuck at an airport for longer than anticipated - Las Vegas is the airport to get stuck in -- you can eat, gamble and shop and never leave the terminal.

Actually in Seven Hills here we got over 10 inches. It was wacko. Trees were breaking right and left from the weight of the snow. They weren't built for snow. I'll have to post some photos.

The only worry you would have in July was the runway tarmac melting.:shocked4:

Would LOVE to see those pics RB - we didn't get very much at all on the NW side.

Make sure you check your luggage for the return flight. You're not supposed to lift more than 20 pounds post-op.

I was told 15 - however, I've found that I'm very bad at quessing what things weigh -- I know both my dogs are over 15 so cannot lift them -- which really ticks Riley off because he has such short little legs (Shitzu) that he isn't able to get on the bed by himself.

If I think it's going to be too heavy, I just ask someone to help me with it - so far everyone has been great.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
