Not stuck, not overeating, no virus, but having extreme nausea right after eating...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I consider myself a veteran, but I'm clueless about what is going on now. I'm good about knowing when to stop eating. But the last few days, a couple of minutes after I finish eating I get hit with an extreme bout of nausea and I have to really focus and concentrate on not vomiting. It usually passes after a minute or two, but it's a tough couple of minutes. Any idea what's causing it, or anyone else experience the same thing?

A lot of things could be causing it and a large number of them aren't band related. I would definitely make an appointment with your doctor. I would also start noting if it's certain types of food that cause it more than others (greasy, sugary, milk products, etc). For instance, if your gallbladder is going greasy foods would could cause that reaction.

If it's all food causing it, I'd try to really remember exactly how and when it started.

Hang in there!

I meant to add that I've already had my gallbladder removed, so that's not the culprit... No particular kind of food... it could be something as bland as a pork chop or as spicy as a thin crust slice of pizza. The frustrating thing is I stop eating when I'm satisfied, which is less than a cup of food, and then in a couple of minutes the nausea starts and I really have to fight it so I don't throw up.

Wow, that sounds incredibly frustrating and a bit scary.

I would definitely go see your doctor, preferably both your bariatric surgeon and your family doctor, so between the two they can figure out what it is.

I went through something very similar at about 1 year post banding. I was doing everything right (so I thought) and following all the rules, but I'd feel nauseous after eating small amounts of nearly anything. There were days when even liquids made me feel sick. It took months of very fast weight loss but also some trial and error (and talking to my doctor) to figure out that it was all in my head. It's almost like I had become so addicted to the weight loss that I didn't want to eat. I still struggle with it sometimes (long recovered anorexic, so makes sense). Yes, obviously you need to talk to your doctor and make sure there is nothing wrong physically, but it very well could be "all in your head." I would never think that possible if I hadn't gone through it.

If it helps at all, a strategy that worked for me was to give up the 3 meals a day plan and focus on getting in just 1 or 2 bites at a time and keeping that in for a few hours and trying again. I counted calories and not meals and still eat more that way on a daily basis.

Hope you feel better and good luck!

If you have allergies, it could be post nasal drip. I am fighting it right now and the funny thing is I have had this happen yearly since 09. I just figured this out last week. Fall is the only time I have ever had to have an unfill. Even when I don't feel it dripping I just feel full without putting anything in my mouth. Good luck.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
