2 days away and sick...

Recommended Posts

Naturally, I've not been sick in 6 months, not even a sniffle but 2 days before surgery I'm feeling like crap. I have a really sore throat, sneezing, allergies, no voice at all, etc. Is there any way they would cancel surgery? Should I choose to postpone it? My theory is that if I'm going to have to be off work anyway, and feel bad, I might as well do it all at once. I do not want to postpone at all. I've worked really hard doing pre-op diet and mentally, I'm ready. Does anyone know if taking over the counter cold meds is permitted so close to surgery? I know you are not supposed to take aspirin, blood thinners, etc. I plan to call my patient advocate later today...

Your patient advocate is a wise choice. I know if you have a temperature they'll postpone surgery anyway so best to find out through your advocate.

Conner is it probably that you may have your surgery postponed. The reason being your immune system is compromised. It's working overtime trying to combat whatever is making you sick at this time. With a preoccupied immune system, you have depleted resources to heal after surgery and to combat and potential infection risk. This will result in a prolonged healing phase (Incisions take longer to heal, Fluid retention, prolonged inflammation etc). There's also complications with the surgery unto itself. Realize you will be intubated and under anesthesia. If you have any lung infection brewing this can result in poor ventilation support. The last thing you want is to be in surgery and them having to stop prematurely due to poor vitals etc.

I am not trying to scare nor upset you. I am an RN and am rambling off all the possible issues you may face so you can make an informed decision. Be upfront w/ your physician and allow him/her to make the final determination.

Good luck hon, hang in there :)

Thanks. Called today and they said I could go forward if I do not have fever or a lot of drainage. We shall see... :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
