Discouraging?! :/ 17 Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

I am 17 days post op. I realize that the first month is supposed to be for the healing process. But I have only lost 6 pounds since surgery...and 14 pounds total (including pre op). I know because I am a lower BMI bandster that weight is going to be slower coming off. But are these normal numbers?

I am 5'0. I started at 163 with a BMI of 31.8. I am now roughly 149-149.5 with a BMI of 29.1.

Just wanted to make sure I was on the right track :) My first post op appointment is scheduled for August 21st!

Thank you all for your advice and help throughout this journey so far!!!

Toni

When you don't have much to lose, it's not going to come off quickly. Heavier people drop weight much faster than those who are smaller.

i agree with pretty thick on this one....as a loss is a loss in my opinion no matter what the amount (how big or small) and PS, I'd be happy to be at the weight you are now.....so its not so bad

I am a low BMI to. I'm 4 "11 and 168 I get banded tomorrow morning. I was told the same thing about losing the weight slower. If u want we can be buddies since we are around the same BMI and share each others accomplishment through this journey:)

I too started with a lower bmi and we have similar stats.. I was banded on 7/18 and have lost a total of 21 lbs. (Including pre op diet)... so we have to remember, we only had to do the pre op diet for a week before surgery and she's right... our bottom line coming off is less so my doc told me it would be slower than someone who had a whole lot to lose. BUT I know you must be feeling a difference in your clothes :-) that's what I focus on, not the numbers :-) keep your head up!

When I got below 30 bmi, things definitely slowed. In the last 9 months I lost my last 45 or so.

Hi Toni - I was also banded on 7/26 so today I am also 17 days post op. I can tell you that according to my scale at home I've lost about 11 lbs. (I am a much higher BMI than you) I try not to compare my weight loss during this period since I haven't had a fill yet and my band is currently empty. I agree that this time is supposed to be focused on healing. I asked my nutritionist if I should be counting calories now and she said no but I do it anyway to keep myself in check. I'm concentrating on eating what I've been told is allowed during this time and walking as much as possible. You're doing great! I wish you the best of luck!

I was a lower BMI , also just under 32. I didnt lose the massive amounts that some people do but I lost steadily. I think I lost 5kg (11lb) the first month a little less the next and so on. It took me about 6 months to get down to my goal of around 52kg.

I had no preop diet. I lost 12 lbs the first two weeks and then nothing for the next 3.5 months. Most of the weight we lose initially is mostly fluids our fat cells retain.

So, even the 6 lbs you lost since surgery is mostly Water. It's possible to lose 10 lbs of "FAT" a month but you have to be a marathon runner or ride last place in the tour de france to accomplish a feat like that.

Make no mistake about it, you want to lose fat but losing excess fluids is usually a good thing too. You're right where you should be. If you started out at 350, maybe not so much.

1-2 lbs per week is the expectation with a band..and that is once you get to the green zone and are all healed.

Well, I'm not in the green zone yet and I've been banded since 12/28. I'm still sticking to the rules and counting my calories. I'm thinking I'll be getting to the green zone soon. Slow and steady but I'll get there.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
