Is this heart burn and why?

Recommended Posts

I'm 2.5 months post op and have experienced what I think is heart burn 3 times (I never had HB before surgery). After eating, I feel a burning sensation in the middle of my chest that doesn't go away until the next day. Twice it happened after eating Breakfast sausage/eggs and once after chicken salad. I've eaten those foods before and didn't have a problem. Is this my band telling me not to eat those foods or have I done damage like dilation or slip? I've never had a stuck/PB/vomit episode. A few times I've had left shoulder pain after eating, but I figure that's from eating a bite or two too much. The heart burn (or whatever) is annoying, but I'm more worried that I've done damage to my band.

Almost from day one I've had heartburn with my band. The only thing I can do is take one Prilosec daily and this completely makes the heartburn go away. I've had the heartburn with an empty band and a full band and can even get heartburn from Water if I don't take the Prilosec. My band and pouch are fine. Some of us just get heartburn with the band. At least it's an easy fix!

Thanks Guy! I feel much better. Did you have heart burn before the band? Very strange that the band can actually start it. My family has major issues with GERD, although I've been the lucky one to never have a problem.

Call you doctor and let him/her know what's going on. It does sound like heartburn, but I'd rather not diagnose.....everyone is SO different.

I've had reflux since before surgery, and still have it. I had hoped with the hernia repair it would stop. I go on and off Prilosec, because long term use can cause other types of problems; a deficiency in one of the B Vitamins (don't remember which), and an issue with bones. Talk to your doctor. Prilosec works great for reflux, but if anyone is going to take it daily for years, they need to be aware of the issues it causes. By completing blocking acid in the stomach, certain nutrients aren't absorbed. That's where the issues come in.

Feel better!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
