Synthroid and Weight Loss

Saw my endocrinologist today. He lowered my dose to 125. And specifically said as I lose weight it might need to be adjusted again so to come back in three months.

Okay - does weight CAN affect it. I see my doctor tomorrow to go over my results. I'm curious to know how they adjust the meds, when only the T3 is low.

Tara - do you know what your numbers are? Just curious.

No. I didn't happen to get them. He also checked my Vitamin D, B12, and some others so there were a lot of numbers today.

I've had absorption issues in the past so he wanted to make sure I'm staying healthy. Those past issues are one of my reasons for getting the band. At one point I had damage to my nerve sheaths cuz my B Vitamins were so low for so long.

And his scale has me down 71 lbs. ???ƒ

That is GREAT! 71 pounds is a lot of weight!! You must feel so much better. Were your Vitamin levels good?

When I go to my doctor today, I'm going to ask her to do blood work on vitamin levels. I want to make sure that my B12 is good, and that the 5,000 of D3 I've been taking is adequate.

Yes, all Vitamin levels were good. But I've been faithfully taking them as the endo had said he was going to give me a stern talking to if I didn't.

Tara - the doctor put me on a low dose of Cytomel (T3) to bring up the number. The concern is more about why it dropped from 2.8 (last read) to 2.0; why I'm not effectively converting T4 to T3. She said that it could be from the weight loss, but given some other issues I'm having (headaches, fatigue & easy bruising), she thinks possibly I'm not getting in enough nutrients from what I'm eating. She said that 1,000 calories a day isn't a lot, and because I'm not eating adequate amounts of fruit & veggies, I could be deficient in various things. She wanted to do some specialized blood work, which would cost a lot of money out of pocket. I told her that I would start on the Cytomel, and pick up a good liquid Vitamin AND mineral supplement. I've been taking the gummies, but I think (I've always thought) they greatly lack in so many important nutrients. SO - yesterday I picked up a very good liquid supplement, and interestingly, today I haven't felt any fatigue (so far). I'll see how it goes as the days & weeks pass. She wants to see me for a follow up in two months. She wanted me to see the nutritionist in her office, but given that I'm a bariatric patient, I'd rather meet with the one in my surgeon's office. With all the Protein we're supposed to get in daily, I don't know where there is space for enough veggies and fruit. It's going to take a little time to figure all of this out.

PS: She said that selenium is a key mineral in thyroid function. There is plenty in the liquid supplement, but she said that one brazil nut per day gives all a body needs. Interesting.... But she also said that I could very well be lacking in many other things as well. Time will tell :huh:

So glad your dr is thinking of all the options. Not just reading the blood results and only giving you higher dose or new med. Did she mention anything about iodine? People cut back on salt and some develop issues from lack of iodine too.

I take a daily Vitamin I bought online. opurity band optimized Multivitamin. I also take two Calcium chews (double dose) and well as some extra Biotin. This combo seems to be doing good for me. I pretty much stay under 1100 calories every day. And I make an effort to work in the veggies and fruits. Broccoli and brussel sprouts are my go-to veggies. Being low in certain Vitamins will make you feel bad.

Hopefully things will start working out for you and you'll gain some energy. I shopped with friends yesterday. We walked over five miles and I was the only one that had the energy to swim last night too. And I used to be the one with the aches and pains looking to "relax". They're still all weigh less than me but every day I'm gaining on being healthier than them.

Well, the liquid Vitamins went back to the store the next day. Day #2, I dry heaved after drinking them. That is the first time I've had an episode like that since surgery. It really freaked me out, so I emailed my surgeon about possible band slippage. He wasn't concerned, unless the heaves continued beyond the one episode. I went to his office yesterday for a small fill, and picked up a bottle of Celebrate chewable. I'll see how that goes. It's very frustrating!

I looked at the opurity online. I may try those next time. Thanks for the suggestion. I never heard of them, but they sound as good as any of the other reputable bariatric supplements.

I have to make a concerted effort to get in enough veggies. They push Protein so much, and say it should be the first thing we eat. Well, after that, there isn't much room for veggies. I'm going to start eating some for Snacks. It's a total balancing act!

Well keep at it. It may take awhile but as long as you keep trying then you'll get healthy.

I'm getting close to 199. Less than five pounds to go. I'm getting excited about that.

I didn't weigh this morning as I know it's not possible to be 199 yet. Gonna hold off a few days so I can see a bigger drop instead of just .1 lbs. but hopefully it will happen in the next two weeks.

I just went to my PCP yesterday 7/30 and I had to have mine lowered. I am 2 months post op and have lost over 30# now down to 168, woohoo! I am so happy! Not only did my synthroid have to be reduced but no cholesterol, no triglycerides and off of HBP meds too.

WOW - that's fabulous.....congrats! Yep, the band is doing what it's supposed to do :D

I went off my blood pressure meds after the first 25 pounds came off. Very happy about that! I'm going to have my cholesterol and blood sugar checked, to see if those numbers dropped as well. I would almost bet the house that they did :)

My experience has been that its KEY that you get in enough Vitamins and minerals.

At 16 months post banding, I started having episodes of stroke like symptoms. I even lost the ability to speak! After multilple trips to the ER, several hospital stays and more neurological testing than anyone should ever go through, my doctors all threw up their hands and started me on anti-depressants. I was very lucky to have my bariatric specialist who brought up the need for micro-nutrient testing. They discovered that I was deficient in multiple vitamins and minerals. My levels of B12, B6, Iron and D were all really low. I started on very large doses of vitamins and started getting b12 shots weekly. It took about three months to begin to recover and it took about nine months to get my life back to normal.

I take Alphabase Vitamin capsules-4 daily-2 morning and 2 at dinner. I just recently switched from ones with Iron to those without because my iron needs have dropped ( a different story for a different time). I break them open and put them in my Protein shake.

It's pretty scary how much impact a Vitamin deficiency can have on your body!

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
