Are there certain over the counter medications you are not allowed to take anymore due to having the lap band?

Can you take Advil, Tylenol ,ect....?

How about decongestants?

What about prescription drugs , Percocet, muscle relaxers, or any other prescriptions?

Definitely questions only your bariatric surgeon can answer. Most docs do not want you taking ibuprofen or any Nsaid products. Tylenol seems to be acceptable to most docs.

Nsaids(aspirin, advil, aleve, ibuprofen) can cause stomach ulcers and most docs would prefer you stay away from them. But, you should always, always check with your own doctor regarding meds.

Low dose aspirin was removed before surgery for me and they want to wait awhile before adding it back. Some medications may be difficult to swallow. I was on Niaspan but the size of the 2 pills would make a small calf gag. Because these are a compressed time release, I could not crush or cut them. My PCP switched me to Slo-Nician which was over the counter and cheaper and could be cut but still not crushed. I would do over your whole list both prescription and OTC with your healthcare provider and pharmacist.

The only thing I was told was no NSAID's which includes ibuprofen and motrin. However, I have been told that I could take NSAID's in liquid form if necessary and this has been helpful because liquid motrin helps with swelling and is great if your band gets too tight. The main reason you can't take NSAID's in solid form is because they can sit in the pouch and cause ulcers.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
