To keep surgery a secret... Or not?

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I get banded on 8/5... I'm making arrangements with work (I supervise a development team) and so far only my immediate supervisor knows what surgery I am having.

Did you tell the people you worked with?

I just got an email from someone higher up who heard I'll be out asking if everything is ok...

Would love to hear some thoughts/experiences...

Thanks!

Amy :)

a few close friends at work know and have not blabbed at my request. My manager only knows I had surgery to help my knee (which was a white lie in that I'll need knee replacement and the weight loss will help....hence my little white lie) I've dropped 70 lbs. so folks are obviously noticing the weight loss but if asked what I'm doing to lose the weight, I just say that I'm calorie counting which again is true. What I leave out of my response is my own business.

Im in the same boat. My boss can't hold water!! He blabs about everything, he's worse than a girl. I've only told one of the girls at my job and she's been so supportive. It also just happens that she's leaving the job.

Also you don't have to share everything, calorie counting is all they need to know. Sharing to much info leads to too many unnecessary opinions.

I noticed your surgeon is Dr. Schwack. I had Dr. Ren-Fielding.

How was your experience with them? I had my psychological visit today. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I kept it to myself from everyone except my husband. I told those who had to "know" I'd be out for extended period I was having gallbladder surgery. The surgery and recovery period are very similar. I don't think it's anyone else's business and I really didn't care to hear all of the opinions (pro or con) that would inevitably follow. Additionally, I didn't want to give fuel to the smoking area to discuss how easy it was for me to lose weight when they notice the weight loss. When they ask, I just say--I am eating small portions, exercising and have cut sugar out of my diet.

Huberman, right? He was easy... My experience was that Ren-Fielding is a good surgeon but I got more information on this site than anything they told me in the office...especially the nutritionist. She was of no help other than telling me to eat 3 oz. Protein, 1/2 cup veggies, 1/4 cup carbs. It's working but I'm also wide open...no fills. I'm just one of those lucky few who doesn't need them. I was banded six months ago and lost 70 lbs. so far.

I told my job that I had a hernia surgery. They are fixing it while they are in there so it is not a lie. If people ask about the weight loss I plan to say I have made a lifestyle change. I may eventually tell people depends on the situation. I am a high school teacher. I have an internal moral quandary as to what to tell my inquisitive students. Lol

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
