The Lap Band Didn't Work For Me.....

Recommended Posts

My surgeon really pushed the fact that I would literally have to work my ass off with the band. And I did! He states that most bandsters only lose 50% of their excess weight. It is a slow process and most don't have the patience for it and want immediate results.

You must work you ass off, eat less, and eat right. It is your tool and only you can work it.

I am happy to say that I love that I have the band, I have worked, and will continue to work to maintain my loss as I was able to lose 100% of my excess weight. It can be done!

It really helps to have everyone on these forums to share their experiences and learn from each other.

I love my band because it helps me to work on my goals. I did a years worth of research before getting banded. Now, 18 months post surgery I'm completely happy with my choice. I work hard and the results show. I have two friends that were banded around the same time as me. Neither of them exercises. Both lost some weight but neither has had the dramatic results I have. The band is a tool to help us become healthy. We still have to do the work. We have to eat right and exercise.

Just to play devil's advocate (please don't flame me) but the band really does make this all possible--for me.

I'm not good at following diets, I'm rebellious, can't have a scale around or it sends me into a crazy binge state, i get obsessive, etc.... Honestly, if I could have done all this by dieting without having surgery I would have!!! So I don't quite understand all of you who are losing weight by sheer force of will and working so hard... I wish I were like you!!!

I guess I'm just thankful that the band is helping me lose weight without having to work that hard. I show up for fills and eat healthy 50-60% of the time, and I did the pre-op diet without cheating, but that's about it. I'm sure as I get closer to goal I'll have to try harder, but so far this is kinda like a dream for me...

When everyone says it is hard work, I would like to know exactly what is so hard about this WLS......don't get me wrong, there is a phase that was very difficult for me, but after that it has been all as easy as can be!!!!

So, I hear it all the time how much hard work this takes...tell me, and others...what do you find so hard???

Like I said, there is an aspect that is difficult....but it is not the entire journey!!

Green Zone:

No Hunger, No Cravings, Head Hunger a thing of the past.......24 hrs a day.....Check!

Portion sizes under control, unable to over eat without adverse side effects...Check!

Steady and consistent weight loss till there was no weight left to loose...Check!

NO Counting Calories, NO weighing or measuring potions....Check!

Does not matter if I am at work, a party, large holiday dinner, vacation, whatever...it is always the same, the band does not change because of where I'm at or what food is available...... so there are no boobie traps or "Falling off the wagon" episodes.....

It can't get any easier than That!!! Can it?

Don't sell the band short!!!

There was a difficult period, but I wonder what everyone else is finding so difficult....then I will share what I found difficult...but I was able to work through it.....

Very well put... I was self-pay. I couldn't afford to Let this new $16,000 "tool" fail without working with it.

The working hard part I think is that there has to be a lifestyle change for most. If you plan on just having a surgery and then coasting - 90% will fail to achieve the desired result. Of course there will always be anomalies but for most the ultimate goal requires sufficient exercise and attention to detail. It requires learning and learning and learning with bouts of trial and error.

Far too many IMO expect a miracle, give a mediocre effort and then complain they stopped losing and the band just isn't working.

I think you are the exception. So far I've been very successful with the band, but it does nothing to quell head hunger. Many of us have gotten to this point for reasons other than actual physical hunger. The band doesn't cure the emotional urge to eat. THAT is the hard part.

I commend you for having worked through all of the difficulties with the compulsion to eat. I also commend you for not finding it necessary to track your food (I've read in several of your other posts). But again, for the most part, I think you are the exception, not the rule.

I believe that as much as we seem to have "it" licked, our addictive behavior is always there, waiting to take over in any weakened moment. I'm really happy for you, that you've got all aspects of this under complete control. By the same token, I don't believe any of us are actually cured; band or no band. It takes continual attention; sometimes more than other other times.

I think I've been at a place where I can agree with every single post on this thread. When I first started, I was in the same place as B-52. It was super easy!!! I really didn't work at it at all! Sure, I followed the rules and as I lost weight I became more active, which in turn made me lose more weight. But I didn't struggle.

THAT's when I became complacent. I decided my lifelong weight loss battle was over and I had won. I ate whatever I wanted and still didn't gain weight - at first. Slowly, old habits crept back in. I learned how to eat even more of whatever I wanted.

I woke up one day (5 years later) to find that I had regained 60 pounds. Imagine that! 60 pounds overnight. It wasn't there one day and it was there the next day. Turns out, this lifelong battle is far from over!

Bad news - I'm the only one responsible for what I weigh.

Good news - I'm the only one responsible for what I weigh.

If I'm not responsible for it, I'm not in control of it. Plug in anything you want for the word "it" in that sentence. My weight, my happiness, my health, my behavior, my anything!

So now - although I'm 7 years into this journey and have maintained a 100 lb weight loss (at least I didn't undo all of my progress!) - I feel like I'm back at square one with the lifestyle. I'm learning to work the band instead of letting the band do all the work. I log everything I eat. I'm working out. I'm getting and giving support.

I have always been in love with my band because I really thought it was the magic answer for all my life's problems (because - of course - every single problem and every single thing that made me slightly unhappy or uncomfortable was all because I was fat, right???). Now I'm in love with my band because it's not a magic answer. It doesn't work for me. It doesn't "make" me lose weight. What it does do is force me to take responsibility for my own life. And when I do that, I have more control, more confidence, and more satisfaction that I could ever have imagined.

Shelly

EXACTLY what I'm saying.... We are never cured of this curse. When I hear people say that they'll never be fat again, I wish them well & hope (for their sake) that they never have to revisit their demon. But that attitude scares me, because how many of us THOUGHT we had it licked at one time or another, only to have the weight creep back on? May take 3-4-5.... years, but the propensity is always there. The "it's so easy, what's your problem" attitude, certainly raises an eyebrow. My wish for everyone (including myself) is continued success, but it takes a concerted effort (more at times than other times). As you said, when you became complacent, little by little......back it comes.

@B-52.....I PRAY to god I can be in your shoes some day.

But IT is very hard as 9 months out and still no help from my band. I wasnt expecting it to take this long so it is a damn hard stick to diet. I am doing well but not having much results yet for losses but am hopeful if I ever get to this green zone everyone talks about...it will be easier than it is now and that is what I hope for.

MY fingers are crossed to be like you and others like you very soon :)

I'm like B-52 in that when I'm in my green zone I have no hunger, no cravings, nothing.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
