How much could you get down?

Recommended Posts

I had the surgery yesterday and today I'm trying to get as much fluids as I can including the Protein and water… I was told to try and get 60 g of protein down...was anyone able to do this the day after surgery?

No way!! I was so concerned but my dr told me not to worry about the Protein for the first few weeks. He said to focus on staying hydrated!! What a relief!! Now I'm a little more than two weeks post-op and have no problem getting enough protein. mushy stage is amazing!!

I was also told no Protein at first & just stay hydrated. I'm 6 days post op & being able to drink enough fluctuates.

The first week or so it was hard to drink in general. I didn't have issues keeping things down, but I couldn't drink big quantities of fluids at a time. Just make sure you remember to sip sip your Water and protein!

On postop day 1 I had 20g Protein, on Day2 70g, on Day3 57g, on Day4 90g. I found that if I drink milk based shakes, milk makes it more delicious and adds extra 8 g Protein. In the morning I stick with 1 cup FF milk+ 1 teaspoon instant Decaf coffee +1 scoop Pur Protein vanilla = 33 g protein. If I repeat this at night with fruit instead of coffee flavor, then I am at 66g protein total without counting the lunch. This seems to work for me.

Of course, I could drink 1 cup of milkshake only on Day 4. I remember on Day 2 it took me half an hour to sip 6 ounces of it, then I was totally full. It will get better!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
