Get my first fill on Tuesday 6/18!

Recommended Posts

Any advise as what to expect on my first fill? I am down 20 pounds since my surgery and am overly anxious to drop more and more!!! Adding exercise now has been amazing to my energy level. I feel that I can eat a lot and it kind of scares me. Do you get to choose how much to fill or how do they know what u need? Any advise would be great!

Fills for me, are completely painless. There is at least a couple of different ways fills are given. Sometimes your doc will have you lay on a table, they will locate the port by looking/feeling for it, then insert a needle into the port. Some doc's will have you stand while inserting the needle and adjusting. Thats how they can "adjust" your band...by adding saline into the port, which provides that restriction level.

Some doctors adjust blindly, meaning they add a certain amount of saline depending on their experience, your timeline post banding, and talking with you about how you are progressing/hunger, etc. It may work fine, but it may not provide the best adjustment.

Then theres fills using Fluoroscopy...the gold standard in my opinion. Using the fluoro machine, your surgeon and you can SEE your restriction level as he/she adjusts your band. They can also see correct placement, "pouch" size, and other information. Some also find it easier to locate the port using this method. I'm a big fan and advocate for fills using Fluoro. Without it, I'd never have reached correct restriction.

I just got my first fill... Still sitting in office drinking my huge glass of Water. I'm terrified of needles and it wasn't bad.

I got 0.8 added.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
