Anyone's nails doing something weird?

Recommended Posts

I don't think is related to the band, but I do think it's related to either low-carb eating habits, or maybe just a change in eating habits, or maybe just general weightloss. This has happened to me once before, about 4 months into my Atkins experience. Never happened before, or since, until now. Anyway...

My nails, where the white meets the pink, will start to look sort of transparent in a thin band, following the contour of the nail. Does this for a few days. Then the transparent area starts to turn a reddish purple, but not everywhere, just in spots - sometimes big spots, sometimes little spots, sometimes tiny spots... but all spots follow the ridges in my nail, it's just a matter of how deep into the pink area they go. After the spots have been there a few days, the area will start to have a weird discharge from under the nail. It DOES NOT have any odor or color, and when it dries it just looks like a shiny area, almost like there's dried superglue there. It's thicker than Water because if you push down with your finger, pushing the nail against the skin, it will "stick" for a bit before pulling free... tacky, kind of like glue. The best example I can think of is that it's almost like serum (the clear Fluid that is in blisters). There's no pain/discomfort. From what I remember (last happened about 2 years ago) it will stat sticky/wet for maybe a week, then it will be better, and the white of my nail will be lower down on the bed than it used to, like the pink area where the weird stuff formed becomes detached... but eventually it goes back to normal.

I went to my doc last time this happened and she wasn't sure what it was. She ruled out infection, under-nail fungus, and all other things usually associated with weird nail things. She finally ruled it as, "irritation" and told me to come back if it didn't clear up. It did, so I didn't. I assumed it was a one-time fluke kind of thing until now. :)

Last time it started with my left ring finger, and this time it's starting in the same place. Last time it ended up hitting both ring fingers, both little fingers, and right hand index finger. So far I only see "signs" of it on my left ring finger and left little finger.

BTW, I don't wear fake nails or anything else known to cause problems. I do get manicures, but I don't have them polish, just buff & oil. Nothing has happened out of the oridinary, I've been doing the same things for years and have only had this happen the two times that I've changed dietary habits.

Anyone else or am I all by my lonesome?

Okay, I read over your post twice & I can't seem to understand or picture what your fingernails are doing?!? Is there anyway for you to post a picture?!?! :)

I can post one when I get home. I have a pic from the last incident, too, but I don't know the URL off-hand. :)

Sounds like a nail infection to me. I had something similar once, but only one one thumbnail. The nail eventually cracked down the center and came off immediately, then after a round of antibiotics it cleared up and grew back in to normal. Maybe this problem isn't diet related?

I dunno. Doc said infection would involve discoloring of the nail, or pus discharge, bad odor, redness, pain/tenderness... and I didn't have any of that. Didn't have a fever... If I couldn't see it happening, I'd have had no idea it was going on. It also cleared up on its own w/o medication in just a few more days.

I don't know for sure it's related to anything around what I'm eating, that's just my best guess since the only other time I've had anything remotely like this was the only other time I've had significant weightloss, been eating a low carb diet, etc. It could be unrelated. It's just the only "what's the same now & then" factor there is. I know, I hate it when people are like, "Oh I have a headache and I got banded a month ago, is my band causing headaches?!" but in my case, eating/weightloss are the only consistents.

I'll grab some pics ASAP.

I'm not sure I really understand what exactly your nails are doing, and not sure this will help, although fairly sure it will not hurt!!!

My FIL got a nail fungus, and is diabetic, so he was having a really bad time clearing it up, and finally read a Dr. column inthe newspaper about applying Vicks Vapo-rub to the nail twice a day, and it cleared it up, after several rounds of antibiotics failed to. He just rubbed it in, like a lotion morning and night.....

Like I say, it might not help, but shouldn't hurt if all else fails either. Good Luck!!

No worries. :) I was just wondering if anyone had experienced the same thing, since we're all (hopefully) sharing the weightloss experience.

I'd be suspecting diet to be honest. Spots on your nails and ridges and things like that are signs of deficiencies of things like Iron. But such is life being banded - have you tried a hair, nail and skin supplement? Are you taking a multi?

If you start taking something specific it could take a few months to take effect.

Its always possible of course that its something specific to you that you're prone to and not diet related, but it'd be my first thought, especially since it happened before when you were dieting.

Sounds kind of freaky and would probably scare the snot out of me if I started leaking lymph from my fingers. I am a MAJOR 'me-too-er' from way back and have never heard anything like this.

Dietary? Hormonal? I think heavy metals affect your nails, did you have rapid weight loss on Adkins? You are city right?

Interesting, very interesting. Take care and keep us posted.

let us know what it is when you find out! I wanna see photos too.

Mine went thru a peeling stage I know was lack of Vit. So I started taking them again they would peel like they had sunburn or something lol.

Other than that I have super thick "Dragon toes" toe nails I hate them, and my nails will grow some then break off at the base...Im too rough for pretty nails I think lol

I have noticed my nails are kind of weak and breaking easily. My hair is also falling out by the ton. I am taking Nioxin hair and skin supplements as well as a one a day. I am using the nioxin products to for Shampoo and conditioning and styling. I would like to know what causes the hair to fall out . I know it is fairly common in weight loss. I asked the doc and he wanted to know if I am getting enough protien. I think so because I have not really lost much wieght. About 20 lbs. Just had a fill today and am hoping things will start to move along faster now. I feel like I have pretty good restriction today. Had Soup for dinner and I felt full. still do in fact.

that is a good thing. I was hoping to go for a walk tonight and it is very cold and windy here. I may have to consider the tread mill. Ick!

Any ideas about the hair anyone?

Well, since I've been banded, I have the most amazingly strong nails, like they were when I was pregnant. I mean, I can grow my nails to almost "exotic" lenth! :) Before I was banded I had sort of flimsy papery nails that would easily split or shred.

When my nail cracked down the center there were zero signs of infection. One day I noticed a tiny crack in my thumb nail. Soon the crack was bigger. It eventually cracked down the entire center and the nail just disappeared little by little (like watching a puddle of Water dry in slo-mo.) It was an infection, but here's the funny part: The Penicillin gave me my first ever yeast infection "down there." I was young and didn't know antibiotics taken orally could affect you vaginally, so I went absolutely psycho and nearly killed my boyfriend since I thought he gave me an STD. We went to the doc to find out it was only a yeast infection because when you take Penicillin, it kills all the bad AND good bugs that keep the vagina happy! Poor Gary!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
