One Sneeze Or Coughing Spell Might Be Able To Cause A Slip !!! LOOK AT THIS GUYS

Recommended Posts

I read this on the board, is this really possible ???:grouphug: :huggie:

"However, according to my surgeon, while it's not likely, he supposes a severe sneeze or coughing spell might be able to cause a slip. He didn't say it "would cause a slip" just that we should always be a little more cautious of strenous, traumatic movement."

I would say be cautious but not fearful. Don't dwell on what could wrong. Stay positive.

Oh my gosh....I was banded Friday and between the coughin and sneezing how would I know if it has slipped. Now I'm worried.

Anything that increases intra-abdominal pressure can theoretically cause a slip. Coughing and sneezing both do this. That being said--if it were a significant risk it would make the entrie procedure impractical and no one would do it because the complication rate would be too high. I wouldn't be worried about it.

I had a cold the day I was banded and for several days afterwards, I had rather frequent sneezing and coughing fits (not fun for someone who just had surgery.) As far as I know, my band didn't slip - I'm sure I would have noticed something wrong after a year and a half.

I wouldn't worry too much about the variables you can't change and rather focus on the ones you can (like eating right and not drinking sodas)

I'm wondering about this? I'm a teacher and cold/flu season get's me sneezing every year. I know my surgeon sewed part of my stomach over the band from under to over. I don't see how this can happen if that is the case? It doesn't make sense.....

Keep in mind that with today's surgery procedures, the surgeon is supposed to stitch the band in place. This has reduced drastically the number of band slippages. Of course, right after surgery, while you are still healing, it's a good idea to hold a pillow or cushion on your abdomen while you sneeze or cough...but once it's healed, you shouldn't have to worry about it. It it slipps after a sneeze, it's probably because the stitches are loose in the first place, and the band is not properly scarred in place.

Hi, I have a problem. I have had the band for two years now and for the last year I haven't been able to loose weight. I just noticed that every time I get a fill I have pain in my whole left side from my shoulder to my toes and if I sit down for more than half an hour, my left leg falls sleep. Do you have any idea what's going on?

Earlier this month, I had a horrible cold. I was coughing and coughing and I seriously couldn't stop even if I wanted to.

I'm fine though. No slip. My doctor says I'm going to be alright. :yesnod:

I had a really bad vomiting attack earlier this month and was freaked out thinking my band could have slipped. They think the attack was my gallbladder, but I basically vomited every 15-25 minutes for five hours. We're talking at least 8-10 times. I just had a fluro done and everything was fine. I think that the stitch they do to hold it in place really helps with that.

My doc said no to coughing and sneezing. You use your abdominal muscles for that. It is no more dangerous to sneeze than it is to exercise.

Yes, vomiting can cause slippage. Your stomach convulses as your wretch and that can cause swelling and slippage. My doctor recommends coming in for an emergency unfill if I get stomach flu. Otherwise if I eat improperly or vomit once or twice for any other reason, he recommends a day or two of liquids to allow time for any swelling to go down.

That just sounds funny. "No Suzy, you are not allowed to cough or sneeze!" Seriously though, how do you use your abdominal muscles to sneeze... sneezes are usually quick and unexpected?

LOL, I guess I could have relayed that a little better :smile2:

Actually, there are several muscles used to sneeze. But the only one in the lower area of the body is the diaphragm and that is mainly used to draw in air before the sneeze. Your chest and throat muscles actually finish the job.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
