Second Fill and a Spasm OMG!

Recommended Posts

I had my second fill today. We stopped at Burger King on the way home. (great idea right?) I had about three bites of my hamburger and a few fries WHILE drinking my cold ice tea. Needless to say I was in a bit of pain rather quickly. I thought I was eating slow but I forgot about the no drinking while eating thing. The pain pretty much subsided on the rest of the hour long drive home.

I get home and decide to take my meds and take a nap so I put my pills in my mouth and shoot them down like I have for years with a couple huge gulps of cold ice Water. This is when the pain really begins! It hurt so freakin' bad... pretty sure I am having an esophageal spasm. Its a pain I am actually already familiar with due to my rather large hiatal hernia that I had fixed during my band surgery.

I've eaten a certain way for so long I do it without thinking. I am going to have to chew, chew, chew, eat small and avoid drinks while eating. When I do drink I am going to avoid cold.

I am currently sitting here with a heat pad on my chest, seems to be helping a little but wow... If I wasn't already a little familiar with this intense pain I would think I was having a heart attack.

Live, learn and keep on keepin' on I guess. :D

What are your docs instruction after a fill? Mine strictly order liquids for 2 days right after a fill. I am sure eating anything right now (I got a fill today as well) would NOT be a good idea. Hope you feel better soon...maybe trying some liquids for a day may help.

Well, it sounds like you learned your lesson, no? ;-)

Seriously though... ouch. I feel your pain, and even after years, I still screw myself over sometimes by eating too fast, or eating the wrong thing and get that feeling like I'm being stabbed in the chest.

My nutritionist said that the GI tract (Esophagus, etc...) is basicly a big muscle. If you drink cold liquids, you'll contract and be tighter. If you drink warm liquids, it will relax some. I usually drink my Water at room temperature. Cold is unpleasant for me most of the time. I generally take my pills one at a time, and I even break some of them in half. With one of the medications I take, the 200mg pill was too big for me to comfortably swallow, so the pharmacy gave me 100mg pills instead, and I take two instead of one. It's a bit of a learning curve. Anymore, I take aleve, because I only have to take 1, rather than taking a couple of Tylenol or Advil. I take chewable Vitamins instead of the regular big ones. When I was really tight, I even crushed or dissolved some of my meds, but you need to ask your doctor or pharmacist about that, because some pills are time released and crushing them screws things up.

Be gentle with yourself and good luck. :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
