Got a Gym membership! But now what?

Recommended Posts

First, if you haven't been to the gym for a while, don't even worry about the weights right now - start with cardio (any cardio) for at LEAST 1 - 2 weeks. This is to build up some stamina for when you do weights.

As far as the people, don't even worry about them, they aren't watching you - they are there for their own routine, doing their own thing.

Once you do get into weights, I would advise checking with the staff about getting a personal trainer - they are going to push you more than you will push yourself, but it's also good to have someone teach you the proper way of using the weight machines if you are unsure of (otherwise you are risking hurting yourself severely).

Even if you can't afford a longterm commitment with a trainer, most gyms that you join offer free personal session for new members, and most also offer decent prices if you just want to do a few sessions.

Good luck!

I just joined a gym yesterday. I've done it before but not in a while. Today was day 2 for me and I feel much better already. Im going to do cardio for a few weeks and then ease into weights. I'm not sure about free weights, just not my thing. I'll probably do the circuits. I figure anything is better than nothing.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
