Well, there is good news and bad news :P The good news is that if you're hungry just a couple of days after banding, that's a sign that you are healing well and your swelling is going down. It's pretty darned normal. The bad news is that there's not a whole lot you can do about it until your doctor lets you move on to mare satisfying foods. One suggestion is to consume more of what you're allowed and make sure you're getting plenty of Water. If you're sipping something constantly and not sitting around with an entirely empty stomach it can help. Since Clear Liquids are generally so low in calories (at least the ones on your approved food list will be), it doesn't hurt to have LOTS as long as you sip and don't gulp.

The time between surgery and getting back to real food can be torture, but you can pull through with a little stubborn determination. I stayed on liquids for the first week and spent the second 4.5 days of that in misery from hunger. At my 1 week follow up, I asked if I could move onto purees (need to be lump free and still thin enough to take through a straw) and got the okay because I was completely pain free, no problems with gas, and healing very well, so as a last resort, you can beg for mercy from your surgeon, but NEVER make a decision to eat something off your list until after you've spoken to him or her.

Good luck. I know you can do it.

Not the only one. Hunger comes back with a vengeance. Mine came back about 8 days post op. Unfortunately...this is where the mental work begins. Its mostly sheer will and want power until you can have your band properly adjusted.

I can have full liquids after 7 days and just want Soup that isn't nasty broth! Why do we have to wait so long for Soup? Anyone know?

They just want to make good and sure you have proper healing time. I know it's frustrating. :(

as you heal you will get hungry again

at least i know i did...the band wont make that go away

...def a battle but one so worth winning

keep drinking and just realize as each day passes, it gets easier.

the insides are healing, and swollen from sutures and if someone eats too much or too big

so soon, it could hurt so why they normally say stick with liquids so the insides can heal

good news, it will get easier...now is a good time to get positive thinking and want power working.

hang in there

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
