I have a date!!! Now to decide between the band or the sleeve!

Recommended Posts

I was given a surgery date of March 28th!!!! less then 10 days away and I am starting my pre op diet tomorrow.

I have been set on getting the lap band done however after reading and researching (which includes these forums) I am now really considering the sleeve also. I was always so scared of it because it is permanent but it seems that there are far less complications with it among other things. I know that there are plenty of people that get the band and experience no issues but it does seem that a good majority at some point need revisions etc..

If I had insurance that would cover the procedure I would probably definitely still go with the band because I would not mind having a revision, back and forth to the DR. trying to figure out fills (more then is to be expected) etc.. if my insurance paid for it. Unfortunately I am paying for everything out of pocket and since it looks like there is a pretty good chance that in some years down the road I will need something done in the future with the band I am leaning towards the sleeve. I know that many will not agree and that this is mostly opinion but the real fact is that if something goes wrong with the band yes it will be fixable but will I have the finances to fix it? The main issue with the sleeve would be leakage but from the figures I have seen it looks like the band and the sleeve have the same rate/percentage of a leakage.

Anyways, l may still go with the band but I am definitely weighing my options. Either way I am SOoooo excited that my surgery date is the 28th! I just called this morning and I did not expect everything to move so fast.

If anyone would like to share some links to statistics comparing the two I would love to see them. Please don't bash me though... I am truly only trying to learn and explore my options.

Check out the sister site to this one at http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/index.php?

One thing I notice is a lot less complications posted and a lot more success stories...when you're self pay the aftercare and any problems resulting from banding can be very expensive. Best of luck to you whatever you decide!

Thank you for the link! Someone gave it to me earlier today and I spend all day on their forum looking for complication post etc. Yes, there are many success stories but even the success stories usually experience some complications that can be fixed but without insurance it can be quite costly. Even just going back and forth with fills to find the Green zone etc. I don't know... such a hard decision to make : ) They are both wonderful options.

The sleeve is removing most of your stomach for good! The Band can be removed if be. I would never think of any other surgery but the Band and that is why I choose it and I have no regrets at all. By looking at your picture, I can see I much older than you also. You have to be comfortable with the choice. When I met with my surgeon to book the date the other person there was a 27 year old female and she was doing the sleeve the same day as me. The surgeon ran late because something was wrong with the sleeve surgery. He never said what, there are laws. I went to one of the top Boston hospitals, so things go wrong with every type of WLS. I would ask your family for advice, also. Good luck with whatever you do.

Statistically speaking, only 5% of Lap Band patients have to have their bands removed by no fault of their own. So, if you follow the rules, the chances are definitely in your favor. Here's the studies that support that statistic:

http://www.obesityla...m/statmain.html

http://www.futurity....p-band-surgery/

As far as complications, they're actually much higher and more severe with the Sleeve. Of course there's also the fact you can get the band removed but you can't get the huge hunk of stomach back that they cut out for the Sleeve.

At the end of the day, you have to do what's best for you. Just be sure to base your choice on actual facts rather than ancedotal evidence on forums or Youtube.

Best wishes

Thanks for the links. I am not only using forums for my information however I do get a lot from them. I have been looking at studies on both surgeries. When you talk about more severe complications... what complications are you referring to other then leakage? I just need to know what I should look into further.

The mortality rate is higher for the Sleeve and the surgical complications are much higher. Post op, the Sleeve has issues with dumping and malabsorbtion, too.

The one thing in the Sleeve's favor (from my personal opinion) is if you're self pay, your costs are relatively done after surgery. With the band, your post op care costs would be a lot higher because of all the fills.

I will look into those things further but I have read otherwise also. Definitely looking into though. From what I understand the mortality rate is not much higher at all. Though obviously it is a riskier surgery so it is expected that it could be. As far as malnutrition .. from what I have read it is not a problem unless Vitamins are not taken as needed and that many do not need anything other then a multi Vitamin. Again... I will look into it further.

As far as the dumping from what I have read that is kind of like the people that slide their way around the band by eating sliders... more of a user complication?? Will definitely check on it also..

The other thing that I notice in all of the studies is that the Super Obese (ME) do not do so well in general with the lap band. Are success is often times calculated in a separate category much like in one of the studies in the link above. Another reason why I am questioning my options. Thanks for all the info!

Well I understand what you are saying you ha e to do what's best for you. I do have insurance that covers everything for me. Let me share why I went with the band over the sleeve. The sleeve only guarantees that you will lose half of your excess weight I have a friend who had the sleeve don't get me wrong she

Looks better than she ever has. She only lost 60 lbs though and hit a plateau. She still has weight she wants to lose and she's back doing every diet under the sun to lose the remaining 50 pounds she wants to lose and it's been 3 years. She's done weight watchers, Atkins, now she's taking Alli. She even gained over the holidays and now shes trying to lose 10 additional pounds. A church member I know got the band and she lost 150 pounds in 2 years. She started at 280 now weighs130 and looks amazing! She said when she stopped losing she would just get an adjustment and it only took her 3 adjustments to get there. For me I figure if I'm going to go through surgery and all this to have a tool to help me. I want it to help me. I don't want to do that and end right back on the diet roller coaster to get the remaining weight off. I wish you the best no matter what your decision!

Sooo hard to make sense of it all! I know three people personally that have gotten the band in the past 6 years. One lost all her weight but had complications and so forth and now is almost back to her original size. The other only lost 30lbs total and is now back to her original size but never had complications other then not losing. The third has lost the weight and kept it off : ) I get that it has a lot to do with us but I do not know how strong I will be plus I look at my friends that were strong and still failed. I don't know what to think : )

I got a lot of praying to do!

Just FYI, super obese can be as successful as you want to be with the band and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I was SUPER obese. My BMI was 72 and I weighed over 400 pounds. Since being banded about 14 months ago I have lost almost 200 pounds and my BMI is now in the 30's. I'm still losing, too.

It's amazing how two people can read the same stuff and interpret it completely differently.

When I read the posts on the VSG site I get scared s@@tless! The complications are really horrific. They involve months in hospital, nearly dying etc. The band complications are a walk in the park in comparison.

not sure about the sleeve did not even consider it once I saw how it was done... I do have a few bypass people in my support group.. they look sickly..one lady was saying how she had pain evrytime she ate.. her hair and skin looked bad.. I think the band is safe even with some of the complications , but each person needs to determine what he/she can live with .. I am personally happy with the band and hope I continue to be successful ...

whichever you get, i wish you the best.

keep in mind, no matter what WLS, unless a mindset is changed and one changes their eating (from cheap fast food) to better quality and in the allotted amounts, it wont work.....no one is better than the other surgery.just having WLS is not a sure thing one will lose weight and never never land happens....what makes a WLS successful is the person who has it and follows the guidelines and gets on with life...

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
