Surgery Day Approaching..what to expect?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery on Feb 22 and I have very mixed emotions. I'm excited that my 6 months of weight loss management is finally over and I'm so close to surgery. However I'm really nervous about surgery day itself and I really don't know what to expect as far as pain and moving around goes. Can anyone share their surgery day experience with me?

I was banded 01/25/2013 and like you I had a 5 month journey preparing me for the actual surgery. Surgery day I was nervous, a little scared but I just kept reminding myself about my end goal and of course I made it through the surgery. I have dealt with major gas pain but it's gotten better every day. The day after surgery I made myself resume life as usual... never skipping a beat. I think that is a huge part of healing. Yes you need your rest but if you get up and move around your body actually recovers faster and if you get the gas pain it's really the best form of relief. You will be just fine. You have hung in there for 6 months... the rest is easy!

I had absolutely no gas pain and I mean 0. I was only on liquid tylenol no prescription painkillers. Things that were annoying included spending the first night on the toilet when I got home. Second thing I was allergic to the surgical tape that they used to mark off the surgical field. So I had this large rectangle on my abdomen where everything place the tape had been I had very itchy welts.

Ow! That sounds painful. But kind of funny. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
