Weight loss and PCOS?

Recommended Posts

In my recent visit to the weight loss surgeon's office my nurse practitioner asked if I have ever been tested for PCOS or thyroid problems. She feels based on my calorie intake and exercise that I should be losing a lot faster than I am. I will be having both my yearly physical and GYN appointment soon. Has anyone been treated for PCOS ie taking medication and has it helped you lose weight?

I'm normally stay around 1000 calories a day and do at least an hour of cardio 7 days a week. I do mix up my exercises I'm not doing the same thing everyday. Over the summer I was doing 2.5 to 3 half hours of cardio everyday. And didn't lose anything for months.

In the past when I've brought up thyroid issues with my PCP I always got the vibe that they saw me as another fat person trying to find excuses to be fat. And have to say I find it really frustrating considering I don't really know what more they could really expect me to do about losing weight them I'm already doing. I feel justified feeling this way because I've lost 170 pounds since my first visit to their office.

Hi Honk,

A few years ago, my gyn noticed that I had gained a lot of weight and tested me for thyroid problems. I have low thyroid and take meds everyday. I was also diagnosed with PCOS and could not get pregnant. They kinda go hand in hand. My fertility specialist told me that losing weight may take care of both issues or I could always have PCOS. Ask your doc to do a blood test and find out if your thyroid is an issue.

Oh and taking the meds helped me feel more energetic and better overall, not so much weight loss though. Thyroid issues work against weight loss and overall health.

There isn't a single test for PCOS although checking testosterone levels can be an indicator. I have taken metformin over the years which aids in weight loss but is hard on the stomach.

1000 calories with your fitness level seems low though.

I am going to be banded in January, but I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16. I was diagnosed from blood tests. However, my birth control "masked" my PCOS from showing on bloodwork. However, it came out full force a year and a half ago. PCOS has infertility symptoms, Hair growth, bellly fat in the middrift, and other symptoms. Metformin can help people; however, this drug made my violently ill and could not eat without getting sick. That is why I went with the band. This is the only other tool right now which helps PCOS. I would advise to contact an Endo they should be able to help you.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
