Do I Always Have To Sip Fluids?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, one week post op and down 26 pounds since my first appt two months ago! Just a quick question... Am I always going to have to sip my drinks? Sometimes I'm so thirsty and its hard to only sip! Also, how on earth do you fit so much Water into one day? If you aren't supposed to drink an hour before you eat and an hour after then how do you get it all in with only sips?

well, you are still very swollen so its best to sip as it may hurt a smudge if you decide to drink normal. to me a sip is like drinking a apple martini. i now drink normally but do not gulp as my hub does (or swig). i do try to just take reg drinks out of my glass. but def waited til i was healed up.

Early on its important that you just sip. And to tell you if it will be a forever thing... well its up to your band. As will alot of things about the band its a personal issue. For example... sometimes I can gulp Water. Other times I cannot. I have tried to figure out when I am more likely to gulp and when I can sip. Just when I think I have it figured out.... it changes.

So to answer your question if you are one of the ones who isnt able to gulp... then you need to sip all day and evening to get in your Water. I pretty much have to do that.

A few months ago I had a medical test not related to the band. They handed me 32 oz of water and said.... drink.... I was like... how much time do I have? She said... 5 minutes. I just laughed. I needed 20 and that was pushing it. But I did drink it... of course I felt like a brick was leaning on my chest.... but thats irrelevant! LOL

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
