I Got A Fill - Now Food Seems To Pass Easier

Recommended Posts

Please look up medical responses triggered when the vegus nerve is stimulated.... Sorry but I'm in the medical field and it has nothing to do with a lap band fill or hunger!!!!!!

I had my surgery 10/17 & had my first fill 11/12. I haven't had any restriction except I have pain on left side of my abdomen after I eat. I don't think I'm overeating b/c I stop when I'm satisfied or when I chew the last bite forever which is a signal that I have to stop which is less than a third of what I'd normally eat. I try to chew up the bites & eat slowly. So I don't know what's causing the pain. I see my surgeon again next week.

When I have a fill I usually don't feel it for a few days. Usually get the fill on Thursday and it kicks in about Saturday.

Anyone have fills that DONT LAST. For expample... 1 st fill I had restriction, but only lasted a week, then I was able to eat like a "normal person" ( even though I didnt.. but I could have). Then the 2ed fill I had 2 weeks later, I felt even more restriction, but it went away after 9 days. Now at my 3rd fill (2weeks later). I had all signs of being in my green zone!!! Yay!!... BUT.... after 2 weeks to the day , post fill, my restriction sub-sided again!!!! WTH? why do my fills only last a week or 2? I have 6 cc's in my 10 cc band. I know I have to tweak it a few times, but I thought restriction should last more than a week or 2. Any ideas or anyone have this same prob. I have an apointment on Monday. I asked for a barium swallow to see if there are any issues just to make sure... otherwise.. this roller coaster of restrictions is driving me crazy!!

I am the same way.... but I have to do liquids the first 24 hrs so usually dont notice....

Also dont forget... as you lose weight, the fat around your stomach is reduced and that can effect how your band offers less restriction without warning

a stuck episiodde usually comes from eating to fast' date=' no chewing well enough, or generally not following the rules (so most say)...I say we're human and behaviours are the hardest things to change.

I think bands are fickle depending on what time of month, day or your level of stress.

All I'm saying is don't worry that it feels easier, because it (IMHO) shouldn't necessarily feel harder.

If you can stay with the satisfied feeling for 4-5 hours and the food goes down easier...well I'd take that scenario any day of the week.

When you say restriction what is it you really mean? Is it that you are physically restricted by the band in the amount yuo are able to eat?

Here's a great piece on laband and restriction...

the purpose of the band is not restriction; the purpose of the band is to lose weight by suppressing the appetite.

Everyone should read Dr. Simpson's website. He answers MANY of the questions about restriction feeling.

Go and read www.drsimpson.net and that will explain about restriction. I had the same concerns as you, exactly! I wish I had read his explanation months ago. Now, that I understand what was going on with My body and the band, I'm back to losing weight and feeling like a "normal person."

After my 1st fill I felt that way for the 1st 3 weeks then all of a sudden I felt a lot more restriction and started having "stuck" episodes. Before every meal I have to remind myself to eat slow and chew lots or I get stuck. I am going in for a 2nd fill today but I will be addressing this with my Dr.

Good luck to you!

a fill is not meant to make food harder to go down or limit what you eat. A fill is simply to get the right pressure on the vagus nerve that will then trigger the I'm not hungry response and allow you to go 4-5 hours between meals.

Please read Dr. Simpsons explanation. Www.drsimpson.net/fills/Lap-band-eating/lap-band-not-restriction/lap-band-and-restriction.html#top

You should be able to click on this and it will take you there. Someone else also has his site if you look under LAPBAND FILLS in this forum. Good Luck to you!

I asked my nurse about restriction today and she says you are waiting for the band to do something. Letting the band work you instead of working the band.

Ty Ty Ty Ty Ty

I have been so confused about all this restriction talk so I asked my nurse today about it . She said it is an old term they used to use yes even her but if you are looking for restriction you are looking for something the band is not meant to deliver. Thank you so much for providing that link! It just verifies what I thought I knew!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
