It took about 3 weeks for my shoulder pain to go away.........but it did eventually! Heating pads helped me the most. Hang in there!

Thank you this pain has brought me to some tears, at least now I know that this is part of the surgery. What causes the pain, do you know?

Hi, I'm sixty and was banded this last Monday and am doing great. I do have shoulder pain, but not enough to take anything for it. When I returned home I took liquid Vicodin the first night and then liquid Tylenol that next two nights and that was it for pain medication. I'm able to sleep on either side, but haven't had enough courage to sleep on my stomach yet.

Question: The day after my surgery my Gout flared up. Did anyone else have this problem? My doctor says that she gets 2-3 patients a year with the flair up after surgery.

58 and I am also feeling younger every day. It is so amazing! I started above 200 lbs and am now at 165 lbs. Surgery was Feb. 24, 2006. Things are going very well. I have had 3 fills with little effect. But the weight is falling slowly. I really don't feel restriction. I have 10cc band and it only has 2.6 cc in. I highly recommend the band to anyone.

vericks, the pain is from your diaphragm. I know it hurts in your shoulder but that is migrated pain. Your diaphragm is distended when you are filled with the gas when your surgery is done. They literally puff you up with air to get the instruments to be usable inside, and to give the Dr.'s a field of view. Thats the best way I can describe it being a layman and all. sometimes later it seems to come and go. Walking around and bending over to pick stuff off the floor can help but it can also hurt. Just experiment with movement and see what works for you. I don't know but maybe the movement is just a distraction, All I can remember is that if I just sat there with the pain, I wanted to go nuts. Some say a heating pad helps too. I remember it did help me some too. take care!!

I'm getting depressed. You have all done so well. I was banded on 3/7/06 and have only lost between 10 and 15 pounds. I gave up the breads, etc. I never was one for sweets. I am consuming less than half of what I was eating before the band and still don't seem to be losing. I have only had 1 fill and am due for my second next week. But having been fighting this battle since grade school, I am still not sorry I did it. I just hope I starting losing more soon. I have some difficulty with exercise right now because of severe arthritis, but hopefully when I can lose some, the pain won't be so bad. Oh yeah, I'm 51.

55 here and hoping for a June/2006 surgery date. Dr. Hung's wonderful Nurse just faxed over my paperwork to the insurance company and I am trying to be patient lol

Guess I've been patient enough to wait till I'm 55, another week or so won't kill me.

Good to have a group where I'm not the oldest or the youngest.

I'm just now compling my list of liquids to pick up for after surgery and mushies I can plan on as well.

Ordered a *Magic Bullet* so that I can whip up my protien drinks and keep em in the fridge for dinner when I get home from work.

In my head I understand there's bound to be some pain afterwards, but I am hoping for the least, as I'm such a big baby lol.

Hello Everyone, it appears their are going to be some slick over fifties chicks with all this lapbanding! Thank you so much for the support. I am taking all the suggestions, heating pad, walking, moving, etc. It's been most helpful. All in all, considering now it's my third day since lap band, the surgery seems to be quickly recovering. I have stuck to liquids, Jello and broth. The hot liquids seem to go better in my stomach. I've backed off the popsicles a bit. I haven't felt hungry, but the smell of food brings back old memories. My husband keeps trying to convince me that the jello is a pizza…yeah right! I can't stand the taste of the pain medicine, but I find if I take it on a regular basis I prevent myself from less gas and pain, so I sip it down with a sip of Water. It makes me so sleepy I want to get off of it as soon as I can. Lots of us are being banded around the same time and this is exciting for me since we can share in a lot of the same experiences. I can't try mushies until next week, but come to think about it I think I can just have my Protein Drinks. I haven't been eating very much, but it sounds like I should be trying to get down a few more things than I have. I eat an ounce or two of jello or broth about two or three times a day. I don't feel hungry so I guess that's okay? Feel sooooo much better today, looking forward to the upcoming weeks. I do get a little heartburn, nothing terrible, shoulder pain is getting better.

Luv ya'll and us ladies in purple will persevere!

Hi everyone,

I am 57 and about to be banded in two weeks!!!! YEAH! Of course I am also concerned about not healing as quickly and my skin not being as elastic and not coming back but not having high blood pressure and not getting diabetes seems to make it worthwhile.

I am on pre-op and doing well!

I am 57 years young and have lost close to 60 pounds now.

I was banded 8 months ago on 9-13-05 at age 56 and went back to work fulltime four days later! I was truly amazed at how fast the recovery was for me!!

I'm a non-profit director and do mostly management and computer work but also have to do trainings and attend meetings out in the community. I've had no problems other then a little fatigue after a long day (I generally work 10-15 hours a day.) One of my incisions was just above my bra line between my breasts. It has not bothered me a bit. I'm a double D cup so there's plenty hanging around that could have been a bother!!!

I was up and walking an hour after I woke up from recovery...was a little unsteady on my feet but got better pretty quickly. My DH and I had to drive an hour to get home...I still felt awfully groggy so just wanted to get there and sleep it off. Once home I slept three hours and finally woke up with a pretty clear head. That in itself made me feel a whole lot better! I feel I've had a very easy time adjusting to the band. Getting the fill level one needs is critical and so very individual. Some need none others need several (I had my 7th fill today!) It's getting close to where I feel it needs to be.

Sometimes my weight loss seems soooo slow (I average about 1.5 pounds a week) BUT, I now weigh less than I have in 25+ years! So, I just can't complain...slow but steady. I honestly think being older affords me the patience that will enable me to successfully reach my goal weight.

I will get there...and so will you!

Hey Jude, (had to say that line, makes me chuckle)

Anyway, It has now been nine days since the operation and today I am feeling quite well thank you. Hurray! So if I can get through this I know you will. I felt the same as you, high blood pressure and diabetes was comin around the mountain. I even went out and about today and enjoyed it immensly. Admittedly the first week had a few ups and downs, but got them in control quickly due to the encouragement of my fellow bandsters. Stick with the Bandster group, they will lead you through, they did for me! Good Luck, let us know how you are doing!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
