I had surgery on September 6th, so I am 17 days post-op. I am still a little sore, but overall, feeling much better than a week ago! I had my staples out six days ago. I have been cleared to walk which I have been doing, but told to wait another week and a half to go to the gym.

My dilemma is this: It is a beautiful day outside, and I am contemplating going kayaking with my husband. I'd like some feedback on whether anyone has done this a few weeks post op, and whether you think it is safe to do? I know, I know, I could call my surgeon's office and ask, but I figured I could grab some quick feedback here first!

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions! I appreciate it. I don't want to do anything that could interfere with healing, but I would love to burn some calories and LOVE to kayak!

My first thought... and mind you I have absolutely no medical knowledge other than basic common sense... is I would not go in a river or lake or any body of Water other than my own private bathtub unless my incisions are 100% closed and healed. As far as just basic exercise, my doctor let me get back to it pretty quickly, but I took it easy on the abdominal muscles for a good, solid six weeks.

If you have a tandem Kayak, let your husband paddle. Otherwise, the abdominal workout might be too much since you're not supposed to be going to the gym yet. That's just my opinion. :-)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
