Does Getting Lap Band Affect Marriage?

Recommended Posts

I am meeting w/my surgeon tomorrow to get the ball rolling on getting banded. My question is: I have heard of several people having marriage trouble after being banded and losing the weight. Has anyone experienced this?

I think it Depends on the couple and how they were before. I know some people who get along fine and some that their relationship has changed. In mine my hubs stopped being supportive but I expected this because unless it involves sports it won't keep his attention. My hubby has also became jealous more so because a lot of people have notice a big change in my body. In the end both have to understand this is for your health.

I guess it depends on the state of your marriage going into this. My husband (married 28 years) is my best friend, greatest supporter and all round champion. Not only did he suggest I look at lap band surgery (which I was already starting to do), but he has been beside me every step of the way, literally. He is not a morning person but now he gets out of bed with me every morning to exercise. We walk, cycle and dance together. I love swimming but he was a non-swimmer so he went and got adult swimming lessons.

He does not judge me when I slip up but he is always there with a hand to support me. He is genuinely proud of my achievements and takes great delight, when we catch up with people, in saying, "Oh, you haven't seen Tracey for a while. Isn't she looking great!"

So for me, absolutely no marriage trouble, but I have read of it with other bandsters.

Good luck.

It depends on how secure the spouse may be.. me and my boyfriend (living together) are both overweight. He is not a jealous type. I got the lapband on 8/28/12. He's been very supportive. He's happy I'm going to lose weight. He won't care who looks or want me because he says I'm coming home to him...

Unlike me... I am a very jealous girl, I'm very greedy. I get so mad & jealous whenever another girl is interested in my boyfriend. He is overweight but has a cute face and a amazing personality, which attracts people.

He has no medical insurance so he can't get the lapband..

But if he were to lose weight, I know he will get a little concided & attract a lot more girls. I would be more jealous & just my luck, my relationship would probably be over due to my jealousy.

I definitely want my boyfriend to be healthy and I know I need to be more confident and mature about it, so I hope my weight loss can help me gain confidence & self esteem, so I can feel secure in my relationship.

So the answer to your question is it depends on the person... But I have witnessed some couple get divorce due to a drastic weightloss and I've seen couples stay together and be more happier.

Great topic! I am not banded yet but i am very curious to see how my hubby will act once i lose the weight. He is not a jealous person. I feel like now he doesn't pay me enough attention. I feel hurt a lot of the time. I feel like we don't have the best marriage and our sex life sucks big time. I have noticed since i started eating better and lost 2lbs that he will tell me i don't have to go crazy just yet. Or tell me you can eat that, your not banded yet. Seems like he is already getting in secure. When i met him i was at my thinnest, so he knows what i can look like. I can't wait to see how our marriage changes. Hopefully for the better!

My husband LOVES my band! I agree it depends on what your marriage and relationship is like now.

My biggest advice - If you get to a point where you're struggling, don't take his encouragement as nagging. He's just trying to help. "Remember to wait a minute between bites" is a very sweet thing for him to say!! Don't snap at him for it! LOL

My husband is supportive to a point. He is very happy that I am losing the weight, but really doesn't take the time to understand the band and why things get stuck/cause pain and why sometimes I have to drink a soda to get something unstuck. My husband, like a couple referred to here, isn't overly interested in anything but sports--but maybe when I get "small" enought I can put on a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader type costume and finally get his attention. :) (Really don't think that will EVER happen no matter how small I get!!)

that could be the exception but i would gather if you continued the research, you will hear all good and all bad types of stories.

for me, it gave me back my confidence and that is making me feel more secure, more sexy, more alive than i have in years. so i would say it affected my marriage in a positive way. i am sure my hub would say the same thing.

I have always wonder about this issue...I do believe a good/solid relationship will be enhanced when one or the other partner makes BIG changes...we are talking about weight loss...the question could also be looked at when a person moves up in the job market. We have been married 40 years and this has been a wonderful year for both of us..

At my first consult my dr asked me if hubby was supportive and did i have a strong marriage. I thought the question about the strength of my marriage was odd. I said yes hubby was on board with my decision because he was and is. I asked dr why he asked about the state of my marriage. He said he sees people every day that lose weight and become different people and it effects their relationships. He wanted me to be aware of that. At the time I thought that was crazy. I had been married forever... How could that be?

Fast forward 23 months. I am almost at goal and while I still have a great marriage and hubby is beyond proud of the new me... It's different. I cannot really put my finger on it but either I have changed or he has changed and therefore we have changed. It not a bad thing but I am less tolerant than I used to be about certain things and in return it creates some issues we never had before. We discuss it and are working on learning how to live with the new me and the old him. We are deeply in love and I am not worried about the future.... But I can see how if the relationship isn't strong and you both aren't on the same track it could go sour.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
