I was banded August 24, so a little over 2 weeks ago. My doctor has given me the all clear to eat solids, but I don't feel any restriction and can eat almost as much as I did before I was banded. Is this normal? Will i not feel restriction until my first fill?

Hello, I was banded on June 15...and I felt the same way. After the first week of liquid I was craving solid food. I remained strong and completed the three weeks of the restricted diet.. During my first filling, I told my doctor what I was feeling.. He basically told me that I only had 1cc in my band and my stomach was pretty much open since all the swelling from the surgery had gotten down....

Don't worry, you will feel some restriction during ur 1st filling..you going to feel less hungry and fuller longer... I hope this helps..

A couple things...

It usually takes most people multiple fills before they have good restriction in their band, so don't be discouraged if you don't notice a difference after your first fill. It takes time.

You also need to keep in mind the band isn't supposed to stop you from eating. It's not supposed to make you feel physically full, either. The only thing the band is supposed to do is help you feel satisfied on less food for longer periods of time. Satisfied means not physically hungry. It has nothing to do feeling full. There is a common saying about the band "Just because you can eat more doesn't mean you should".

Best wishes and hang in there.

the band is a plastic thingee they put around your stomach. once fills start, it will help you eat less. its not a cure all.

so dont wait until those first fills to (feel restriction). that is diet thinking. you are not on a diet. you need to change what you eat, (choose healthy options) and most important, change the attitudes to (did i make a mistake) to yes, i am doing well.

until that happens, you need to eat like you have restriction. i do not have any fills and am right now eating as if i do. (i do not go over 1 cup of food at one setting). i am sure if i tried, i could eat more but why did i bother to get this surgery if i was going to eat like i did before?

eat to live, not live to eat.

Thanks so much - jip i quess you are right...man im sooooo impatient. You have really lost 62 pounds since 6 June? That's amazing

(awe, aint you sweet). its not been an easy road. i am very strict and i am very hard on myself. being near 350 made me realize something, its not gonna come off w/me being negative. in fact, that is a part of why i got to that high a number. (i am doing what i have to do to make myself well).

you can do this........heck, you are :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
