Normal??? 7 Days Post Op & Starting "mushy" Foods

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I am 7 days post op and feel like I'm doing great! I can't believe how smoothly the surgery has gone...soooo pleased!

Anyway, I have started the "mushy" food phase. When I eat something like applesaue or yogurt, I feel full after about 1/2 - 3/4 of one of the little cups (the ones I usually put in the kids lunch bags), but I feel hungry again in an hour or two. Is that normal? Should I go ahead and eat the whole cup so I won't be hungry so soon after I eat? I guess what I'm wondering is during this phase, how long should the mushy foods make me feel full before I need to eat again? I worried I'm eating too often and I don't want to mess anything up.

Thanks for your help!

I'm in the same phase. You should STOP when starting to feel full. Try to stretch to four hours before next meal. Drink lots of low calorie or sugar free drinks in between. Make sure your mushies are high Protein and you should feel full longer.

Good luck!

I agree to stop when you start feeling full. I'm not sure I agree with trying to wait 4 hours between meals at 7 days post op. . . further out, yes!

Your body is still healing. As Chandra12 said make sure you are getting plenty of fluids (48 oz of Water minimum) and that you are eating items high in Protein. Also don't drink 1/2 hour before or after a "meal" (longer if that's what your doctor recomends). Following these rules will help you feel fuller longer.

Actually, you probably mean stop when you are satisfied. Satiety is the goal and no better time than now to start looking for it. Changing our terminology is one of the harder things we bandsters face. Don't look for the old full feeling. Stop eating when you are no longer hungry.

No need to go for full. You really don't have much restriction at this stage so if you try to fill yourself up, you will probably eat too much. Your band has very little saline in it now so the portal between the upper and lower part of the stomach is wide open. Not nearly as much as before surgery but open enough to overeat easily.

As long as you are making healthy choices I see no reason why you can't continue to eat every two hours or so. But Chandra is right in that you should try to stretch it out. If you can't, you aren't hurting anything by eating a half cup of yogurt or cream Soup.

I hope when you say yogurt you are eating Greek yogurt as it's so much higher in Protein and it will make you feel fuller longer. Applesauce would not last with me so I hope that isn't a major part of your diet now. My doctor said to eat every couple of hours so I think 2-3 hours is a good time frame to look at. Are you able to eat scrambled eggs yet as that will stay with you longer too. Good luck and happy learning your new band!

Did your doctor's office tell you to start mushies so soon? I did not start yogurt until Day 15. In general right now you are really swollen and won't be able to eat much every meal. In general carbs don't keep you full for very long. The body breaks those down very easily. Greek yogurt is the best choice if you're going to eat yogurt because it has higher Protein. I would make sure to blend the yogurt so you don't get fruit chunks. Personally I add Splendra to Greek yogurt even the fruit ones because it's pretty sour. I'm not surprised that you're getting hungry after an hour because again you're eating 1 carbs and 2 slider foods that go through the band. The 4 to 5 hour rule is really meant for when you're at restriction after Having fills. While in the liquid phase I tried to spread out my food consumption. I would have 8 ounces of broth wait an hour then have my Protein Shake. Helps with both physical and head hunger.

Yeah, I guess "mushie" isn't the right word. "Soupy" would be more like it. I talked to the nurse and she told me I could have a small amount of watered down grits, yogurt diluted with skim milk, strained cream of chicken Soup, etc. Nothing real thick or pureed yet.

I just don't want to overdo it because I have started feeling hungry (I wasn't hungry AT ALL for like the first 6 days). Like this morning I ate about 2 oz of soupy grits and felt satisfied, but then about an hour later I started feeling hungry again so I started sipping on a Protein Shake,

Creamy lentil Soup fills me up. Blended chicken breast mixed in Cream of mushrron Soups is very good. Try and find the lowfat versions in a Fresh n Easy or Trader Joes. Sip your Water all day or Crystal lights. A Protein Shake for lunch if you have no time to eat.

I'm going to be starting my full liquid stage on day 7 which is the baby food consistency and etc. Im noticing that even on my liquid stage I was told to only have 3 oz of a broth or whatever liquid 3x a day and always sip Water. And allowed 2 Snacks which can be a protien shake, sf ice pop or Italian ice. I'm starving and I'm day 4. It doesn't seem like enough. I'm following it but I'm struggling.

are you having Protein Drinks yet? they do help a bit with hunger. I would be having four meals a day if its that small.

Yeah, I've got these Protein Shakes called "Pure Protein" that are 120 cals and 23g protein...don't taste too bad. Takes me a while to get a whole one down.

Designer whey tastes MUCH better than pure Protein if you're looking for something new

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
