My surgeon doesn't have the no carbonation rule. He says our digestive tract is not a closed system, the gas will escape. So, I enjoy beer from time to time. I am maintaining, so I am not trying to create a calorie deficit like I was when losing. Early on in my banded career, it might cause hiccups sometimes. Not so much now. I am breaking his no liquids with calories rule, though...oh well. I love my beer!

As others have said, just be mindful of the calories.

Cool, that's interesting. I love hearing different ideas behind the carbonation/no carbonation rules

I don't like mixed drinks or beer, i live bourbon straight, and i don't like to sip it. I don't drink often but i wonder if i'll be able to drink a shot of bourbon after being banded. anyone know?

I know a woman who had lapband put in. Her husband got a very nice promotion at his job about a month after she had had her surgery. His company took them out for a nice spendy dinner. She thought she'd Celebrate so she ordered a beer. She took one drink' date=' sat there for a couple of seconds and "EXPLODED" all over the table! The carbonation did not sit with her at all.

Once in a while I really want a beer... but I have stayed clear of them![/quote']

I mostly drink wine but i have had a few beers my brand of choice is bud light platinum ill have one or two and be fine but after going to my primary i have decided to give up alcohol completely

Check with your surgeon as to his/her rules on alcohol. As to a contraindication for it, no there is not. It is not carbonated, so there would be no discomfort. It is a clear liquid, you should be able to drink it at a normal rate. As in, I could "shoot" Water, I have done shots of tequila. I can freely drink Water, milk, beer (even with carbonation). I can chug water and non carbonated liquids. Beer I don't chug. I don't sip it, either.

Just remember, if you are told to wait 6 months to a year before imbibing, your tolerance will be lower. However, we still metabolize liquor the same as we always have, so you won't be a true "cheap date."

I got drunk for the first time since my surgery last night. My surgery was June 4th. I did drink a couple beers (we were playing beer pong) but mostly I did vodka shots. My secret to never being a cheap date is to drink lots od poweraide zero while drinking. It keeps you very hydrated.

As far as carbonation goes, I don't have discomfort. I just can't chug it. Small sips are best.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
