Question On Flying

Recommended Posts

I'm a newbie here and I have a question. I have to take a 2 hour flight in a few weeks - it departs early in the morning, (about 7:00 AM), then there's a 45 minute layover before another very short 1/2 hour flight. I have no idea about food and what to eat since I heard the pressure in the cabins can cause tightness, making everything more dificult. I got banded on 7/9, and I actually haven't had my first fill yet, (scheduled for 8/30), so I have very little restriction. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - everyone seems to have a different opinion on this.

I was banded in May and I flew a couple of weeks ago. I had one fill prior to the flight, but only 2.5cc, so not much restriction. I didn't have any problems at all, and I didn't change how/what I was eating before/during travel. Each person is different, so to be safe you might want to stick with liquids/soft foods before/during your flights.

Hi, I was banded at a similar time on July 2nd and have had no fills yet. Since then I've done a number of flights domestic throughout Australia ranging from 1 hr to 4.5 hours as well as a trip to and from the USA. I've found I've noticed very little with the flights have changed since having my band. I've not had the feeling of extra restriction or feeling the band tightening during flight as some people experience.

My morning flights I usually stick to having a coffee before boarding and I'm rarely hungry on the short flights. I often just take the yoghurt or dry Cereal served to eat later in the morning. Other meals I'm happy to have a look at if I'm hungry and usually have a few mouthfuls. Gone are the days of feeling hungry all the time eating every last mouthful of airplane food!

I do pack a Optifast Protein Bar in my bag as a back up meal similar to what i keep on hand for work, which I'd recommend when travelling, just in case of delays or you don't feel like the food they serve.

I also keep a Water bottle with me, keeping hydrated has helped a lot especially on the longer flights. Often I'm more thirsty than I am hungry.

I was banded 7/10 - had my first fill on 8/8 and was on four flights in the last two days. I too had similar questions. I didn't eat on the plane - only had Water. I did eat about an hour or two before flying and didn't feel any different flying than i did prior to being banded.

As with everything you read here the recurring theme applies to this as well... everyone is different and reacts differently. I wouldn't expect to have any concerns, especially this early on in the process.

Eat a sensible Breakfast and you shouldn't be hungry on the flights. If you are, grab a yogurt as you're running thru the airport to your next flight! I did notice that so many of the airport vendors have fruit and healthy choices. You'll do great

Good luck!

I flew about 10 days after surgery from Houston to Chicago. It went fine (except for the dinner with friends at a restaurant, and no one understanding why I only had a bowl of Gazpacho).

Flight went well. You should have no problems at all.

I flew last week and had no problem eating on the plane. But for the week I was away, def had a few things get stuck that normally would never have a problem with. I came home 4 days ago and finally feel better.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'll probably just go with my typical morning Breakfast - coffee, (although I'll have to do Decaf, because cafeine tends to dehydrate you), and yogurt or cottage cheese with or without fruit. I'll play it by ear, and expect smooth travels, (no pun intended :) ).

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
