Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

You may be able to find it at healthyweightsupermarket... it's a local place here in Springfield Missouri. It was started by a bariatric doctor named Brenda Wells. I think you may be able to get information or order from them. Give it a try/search.

At your earlier "protein juice" suggestion I went to www.Healthy-Weight-Supermarket.com myself. They do not have internet shopping (yet), BUT you can view their product line at the website. Click on Food Products, then click on MENU & a PDF will show the goods. You have to call (417) 881-8600 to place an order, with shipping usually $7-$12, or so I was told. I placed my order on Monday, so I can't give any feedback on the products or delivery yet, but the service Martha gave was very helpful! HTH

What kind did you try, and how did you make it? I'm going to guess you mixed it with Water...? I cannot tolerate them unless I mix then with milk, even if it's the Carb Countdown fat free milk. It really makes a big difference. (And I don't like milk... up until I tried mixing a Protein drink in it, out of pure desperation, I'd not had any for nearly 15 years). I don't know if something like that milk is allowed on your pre-op, this kind has something like 90 cal, 0 fat, 3 carb.

Part of it (IMO) is the texture. Something that's watery, but tastes like chocolate or whatever, just isn't right. It's like drinking a non carbonated drink out of a can. Part of it is taste - the milk "creams" out the flavor a bit - sort of blends things together.

For me this made 100% of the difference.

If you can't find one with a flavor you can stand, try "Six Star". It's by fat the best I've found, and I've tried A LOT. Well, let me specify. The EAS whey makes the best chocolate. The Six Star makes the best vanilla, and second best chocolate. IMO. :)

Thanks for the tip...I'm not a milk drinker, but as I've been choking these things down, I've been thinking...this would be SOOO much easier if it weren't so watery!!! I've tride Six Star vanilla and chocolate, unjury chocolate, vanilla, strawberry sorbet, unflavored (in jell-o - BLECH!!!), and chicken broth flavored blended in with chicken broth and Water (most tolerable so far), and I've tried Myoplex pre-mixed chocolate fudge.

I am down an additional 9 pounds since I started...

I'm gonna get some of the carb countdown "milk" today. I'll let youknow how it goes.

I am a texture and smell person when I eat...if it smells bad or feels bad, I have a really hard time eating it...since I've started on this Protein shake portion of my preop, I smell whey in EVERYTHING!!! I fixed the kids some tortilla pizzas yesterday and could smell it in the cheese...I smell it in yogurt...I'm ruined!!!:) LOL

Well, today is a new day...7 days til surgery!!! Surely I can make it til then!!!

Thanks again for the encouragement!

I have never been able to drink any kind of Protein shake and trust me I have tried them all. I can smell it and it ruins it for me.

I drink the Carnation Instant Breakfast No sugar added made with skim milk. I love the taste and it has 13 grams of Protein (with the milk) - not as much as most Protein shakes but I can't choke any of those down anyway.

EAS AdvantEDGE. chocolate Fudge flavored...I got it down and it actually was okay tasting...it's gonna be a good day!!!

17g Protein, 3g carbs, 11 ounces premixed...

WOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!:clap2:

That's great! It was HARD post-op to get down those shakes until I found one that I actually liked. Well, perhaps I should say until I played around with one until I liked it! :P

I was not a huge coffee drinker pre-op, but I have started adding instant General Foods International coffee powder to [Zero Carb] Isopure Protein Powder. "SF Decaf French vanilla Cafe" works well in the Vanilla powder with milk or Water or both -- makes a latte that is pretty yummy. And the "SF decaf Vanilla Cream" is good when I blend my Vanilla Protein Powder with 1/2 c. orange juice & Water or milk -- makes something close to an Orange Julius.

Aslo, adding SF daVinci syrups to your shakes is an easy way to change up the flavors. I actually buy mine at TJ Maxx & Marshals.

The 2 worst Protein things I ever made were:

~ unflavored powder in cheddar cheese Soup - :) JUST AWFUL!!

~ strawberry protein powder blended with crystal light Pink Lemonade, which I really thought was a brilliant idea because I love flavored lemonades. Oh, sooo bad!!!!!! :) B)

Hello everyone I've been reading this forum for some time now and because of what I have read decided to proceed and get "banded"

I was a candidate for gastric bypass 18 months ago, had jumped thru

all the necessary hoops, geared myself up for it,got a surgery date, and failed the last cardio exam.So I lost the surgery date and my enthusiasm

and gained another 20 lbs.

My PCP recently suggested Lap Band and my HMO has a Lap Band surgeon

so I decided to go for it. I meet Dr Fusco (Melbourne,Fl) on the 12th

and I'm scheduled for surgery 4/30. To say that I'm excited would be

an understatement.

I'll keep you posted.

Add-ins help too. I can do the Six Star & EAS chocolate with just milk, but I'll usually add a blob of low fat Peanut Butter. That, too, makes all the difference. Or some DaVinci sugar free "Khalua" flavoring. Mmm. Or even some "Butterfinger" flavored cocoa mix, but just 1/3 packet or so - a little goes a long way.

With the vanilla, it's great with about half orange juice, half milk, and a pack of Splenda. I use the "Light" orange juice (half the calories). It's not as sweet as real, but the sweetner makes up for it.

Hey Christy,

If you like the EAS - you might like the Atkins pre-mix also. (chocolate royale)

I actually prefer the Atkins to the EAS...

Just an alternative in case you can't find EAS or they get more expensive.

Good Luck!

Hey Alldbill!

Welcome to LBT. I guess it's good that you didn't get clearance for ByPass... cause now you get the option to have a band!

Good luck in the process!

I am almost 4 weeks out and I really don't have much appetite. I also have alot of restriction - I get full really fast on mushies and soft foods. I don't have any fill in my band - is the restriction still just swelling?

I'm going on 14 months out and don't have much of an appetite. Lost it two days pre-op, and never got it back.

It could be swelling, it could also be restriction from the band itself. Not everyone experiences that, but some do. I did.

Nothing sounds abnormal to me...

My surgery was 7 weeks ago today...I have not had a fill yet & I'm still nicely restricted (i.e. Three 1" meatballs fills me up for dinner). I couldn't finish an egg or more than 1/4c of tuna salad on the mushie stage before gettign that slight chest pressure feeling, followed by a dry burp. I can eat about 1/3c of less-mushy tuna salad now that I'm on solids, and about 1/3 c of chicken pulled off a thigh. I've got a pattern now of mild hunger at the 3 proper meal-times and I have one snack in the late evening, too. I'm doing really good food-wise, and I feel great aside from some occasional port-pain (which I was told might last about 2 months).

We called off my 1st fill by a week because of it. I'm supposed to go in today for FIll #1, but the dietician I saw on Monday thinks my doc will postpone it again after making sure everythings okay via x-ray.

I think I'm the exception to the rule, however. :) Bloody well figures!!! The dietician was laughing at me when I said "3 friggin' meatballs -- how much more restricted do ya want me?!?" She thought I was doing wonderfully well, even with my 1/2c. OJ several times a week.

Anyhow...take heart! You are NOT the only one! And that means I'M not the only one either! Haaaahahaha! :)

I'm off now to my 1st fill...we'll see what happens!

Im 5'10 and Im 377lbs. :) I have been in denial about how big I am. But 377 holy @#$%, I guess I am fat. I am in the works of losing 30lbs for banding. Im feeling motivated though. :) I cant believe my mini goal is to be under 320 so I can use my scale accurately. "Accurate up to 320lbs"....Wow not yet. Next mini goal is to be under 300lbs...Wow still large, but not 300lbs large. The next mini goal is to weigh less than my husband...260lbs......wow.....I love this forum by the way.

Hi Linda!

Imagine being 10 pounds less than you weigh - and SIX inches shorter... *sigh* That was me at my lifetime high. When I took my pre-band measurments - I was literally bigger around than I was tall. Talk about mortifying!

Good Luck! We will be here when you need us... and you prolly will.

After I eat I'm full for 4 or 5 hours so I'm having trouble getting in more than 800-900 calories and 65 grams of Protein each day. I read on other threads that calorie intake doesn't matter so much as long as you are getting your protein. Do you think that's true?

Since I'm going to start cardio and weight lifting on Monday I figure I'll need more calories coming in but not sure how to do it. I don't want to overstretch my pouch and eat when I'm not hungry...Any suggestions?

My typical day of eating is:

Breakfast: Dannon light n fit smoothie or cottage cheese and a cup of skim plus milk

Snack: natural applesauce cup and a cup of skim plus milk

Lunch: Soup at hand creamy chicken soup

Dinner: Lean Cusine entree

Snack: sugar free pudding cup

I supplement my protein with a 42gram protein test tube, and drink at least 64oz of Water.< /p>

Mini Victory on April 5th! Saw my doc for my post-op appointment and in the two and a half weeks since surgery I've lost 38 pounds. I've been dancing on air every since. Who would think someone could be deliriously happy to weigh 351 pounds!

:( Thanks!

Virginia

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      2. Selina333

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
