5 Days Post-Op, My Shoulder Is Killing Me!

Recommended Posts

so i had my surgery and a hernia fixed this past week, july 3 and i knew going in there would be post-op pain... but i've had such horrible pain in my left shoulder. i realize that it's extra gas and i have been replacing a hot compress almost every hour during the days. nothing is helping, and it's keeping me awake at night. i have been getting up and moving as much as possible, i walk for at least 20 mins. a day and i just can't get any relief. no other pain, my incisions don't even hurt. ( though my ankles are REALLY swollen) am i just being a baby about this? should i just tough it out? any ideas what else might help?

I know some people get relief from gas-x strips .. i think instead of walking 20 mins a day u need to walk for like 10 mins at least every hour, the only thing in the end that shifts gas is keeping moving, keeping hydrated and time. Take your pain meds as this will help a little, get your partner to give u a massage and keep up the heat pads .. brave it out , theres nothing that can be done for gas overall other than 'just getting through it ' ... :)

Wishing u a speedy recovery ..

I remember that pain and I was totally unprepared for it, wasn't on this site and Dr or PA never really covered it other then to say sometimes you have a little pain in your shoulder. LITTLE PAIN . man it hurt like He!! and it lasted about 5 days. I think all the remdys given here would help I know the more I moved the better I felt. That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger.. And good news it does go away in a few days as you start moving.

I had my surgery June 20 and still have pain in my left shoulder, the pain is not as bad as the beginning but is annoying! It gets worst after I eat. I mentioned to the doctor yesterday and he didn't look concern at all he said it was normal.

I had this pain until about Day 10 post op and it just went away on its own. The only thing that truly helped me was a heating pad. I used it constantly.

Gas!!!You might be able to take GAS-X or try walking it out. As another person said, try heating pad, too! Good luck, it will improve! Karen

include me in the hernia repair also. days 4-9 and with my shoulder hurting so bad, i asked hub to cut it off with chain saw. then on day 10, woke up and pain was gone. i took my meds and also moved it (in a shoulder shrugging fashion alot)..hang in there :)

thank you all for the input... i've been moving around all day, keeping the heating pad on and drinking. no change yet, but i'll tough it out... gotta keep reminding myself that even though it sucks right now, everything will be worth it in the end...

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
