There are cases of it happening but they are so rare that you shouldn't worry yourself about it. More likely it was just your subconscious letting you know that it was a little nervy about surgery.

If it does bother you, be sure to speak to your anaesthetist and they will be able to reassure you.

As a young child I suffered a serious hand injury and had to have surgery. I have a very clear memory of being up in the top corner of the operating theatre and watching the surgeons discuss whether they had got all of the glass out of my hand! I never thought it was unusual because I was so young and just thought that everyone had out of body experiences during surgery!

I have had four surgeries since and have never had the experience again. :(

I have heard of people waking up during surgery, but i have never met someone who has. Anything is possible but i think its your nerves getting to you. I have had some funky dreams here lately as i am slowly getting closer.

I wish you luck though and keep us posted.

This is scary! I am glad to hear you are ok. And i hope you never have to go through that tramatic experience again.

My first surgery gallbladder removal was 11/18/11. My anesthesiologist was young, cute and very friendly. Last thing I remember was talking to him in the OR room while he was inserting the IV, then the nurses started covering me with lots of blankets and the thought in my head why are they covering me if am ready for surgery??

Next thing I woke up in the recovery room with my friendly nurse Marlin.

My Lapband surgery was on 12/9/11 and the process was very different. The anesthesiologist was old and quite frankly I don't remember much of him.The only thing I remember was having the IV inserted in my forearm, where it hurts the most.

I can't help but comment on this thread. 1.5 years ago I had to have a routine surgical procedure and was told I would be completely out via an Anesthesiologist. However, I woke up half way into it (eyes shut, but mentally and verbally able to communicate). I was sweating and crying. Surgeon kept trying to comfort me and was talking me through it. Later I asked what happened and they said they couldn't find/locate the Anesthesiologist. What? Seriously? I now mention this to every doc and surgeon and check their credentials.

Don't give it a second thought. I worried about the same thing when I had my 1st surgery and had to be knocked out. I was told by the doctor that today they have equipment hooked up to you to make sure you are completely under anesthesia and not wake up and the Anesthesiologist stays with you. That's what all the wires are for when they operate. They keep track of your heart rate, blood pressure and if you were abe to feel the surgery, they could tell by those. This had happened very rarely and the Anesthesiologist's are well aware and now better equipped to make sure it does not happen.

Dreams are doors to your fears and worries, it's your subconscious mind at work. Don't let it get the best of you. You probably saw the same special I saw on the health network about that happening to people and it stuck in your mind.

I've had three surgeries since and slept like a baby and woke up fine.

Think positive and plan for the rest of your new thinner life....

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
