I agree that you should not "beat yourself up" about having wine, but if you are banded you should be compliant with your surgeon's instructions unless you are willing to manage the possible negative consequences for non-compliance.

We were told that post surgery, your tolerance for all forms of alcohol changes dramatically, and that one drink can put your blood alcohol levels above the legal limits. My doctor warned us that he will not intervene in any DUI cases where the patient had a drink, drove impaired, and then was arrested.

That irked me. How do you know what my surgeon told me or msDuran's told her?

To the OP...1 glass is not the end of the world...next time for each 1 glass of wine, have 2 glasses of Water. Don't think to drive because you don't know how it might affect you differently.

As for the calories...alcohol converts straight to sugar in your blood stream so use in limited quantities.

Forgive yourself and be kind to yourself...there's enough people in this world just waiting to take you down that you don't need to help them with it

Take it easy on yourself and don't drive when you drink more than one glass of wine. Banding doesn't affect the absorption of alcohol, as it does with DS and RNY, so you should be ok if you were ok pre-op drinking wine.

Alcohol actually lowers blood glucose levels so you might feel more "tipsy" due to hypoglycemia after drinking.

The only risk of drinking is that some people find they drink more post-op, since there are foods that bandsters cannot tolerate and it is sort of a "fill the void" guilty pleasure.

Enjoy your glass of wine occasionally without guilt. If you have any questions it is a good thing to check in with your nutritionist to get questions answered.

It was two glasses of wine with my husband who is just home from deployment, in no way were either of us anebriated!!

And he guilt comes from me learning my new way of life with his band and that unfortunately is not a world of fruits and vegetables with Water.. Unles you live in a deep hole somewhere life happens.!! Isn't that what this site is for?!

And ps my surgeon has NEVER MENTIONED this scenario so thanks for your post..! Wth I'm not on here to get scolded!! I was agrevated when I read that as well...

My surgeon and true results tells patients they did a study and found that banded patients who drank still lost at the same rate as banded people who didn't drink. So they tell us we can have one glass of wine every night! They even put it their patient books. I don't but could. I don't look at the band as a diet that I am or could cheat on. I just and going to eat less and try not to have liquid calories, however if the circumstances call for a glass of wine, I will enjoy it

I had the most amazing glass of Elderberry wine from St. Katherine Vineyards in Palusade, Colorado. I don't feel a bit guilty it was delicious and one glass.

This topic came up in many if not all my Pre Op meetings. And the overall consensus was that everyone is different an will tolerate everything they eat and drink different. And so be it true as I've read on these very boards. Some can't tolerate sweets anymore and some cant do bread. While I have seen people on Fitness Pal eating BIG MAC's????!?!??! ( can not fathom this but whatever!) regardless, do what you feel is ok for you! And glad your husband is home safe!! God Bless our servicemen/woman!!

I don't know about all of you, but the whole reason I got the lap band is because diets don't work for me. The cycle of being "good" for a while and then giving up and being "bad" caused me to balloon up to 251 pounds. I follow my surgeon's instructions 80-90% of the time, but I'm not perfect. I don't think he expects his patients never to have a glass of wine or a piece of chocolate ever again, as long as it isn't every day and not in the quantities we used to have.

I think the major thing I credit my success to is learning to let go of guilt about eating. I've learned that I can eat an occasional treat and still lose weight, which is huge for me. I've broken the diet cycle and I'm succeeding for the first time in my life with weight loss, so an occasional glass of wine won't hurt me.

The thing that we often forget, is that there is not just one set of rules....my doctor okayed alcohol after 3 months in limited quantities and warned that the two biggest risks are consuming "empty" calories and becoming sick from getting intoxicated.
