My doc did not fix my hiatal hernia and...

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

A quick question to you all: I was informed by my doc that I had a hiatal hernia that he would fix during the surgery. Well, after surgery he told me when he got in there, it was so small that to stitch it could cause it to rip, and it wasn't worth it. He said it was like the head of a pin. Well, my question is, this hernia was causing me pain upon swallowing before the surgery. Will the hernia cause me the same pain (or more) and more gas, more risk of slippage, etc??? I am kind of mad he didn't fix it. I guess this is more of a question to ask my doctor, but I'm just hoping maybe someone out there had the same thing (small hernia that was not repaired). On another note, it's one week after my surgery and although I still feel exhausted, gassy, and sore, I am finally feeling a bit better! Hugs to everyone.

Congrats on your surgery and welcome to bandland!

Not the same, but I had a small hernia that my doc did fix but said it may not stay fixed b/c of the size, so maybe it is better your doc left it. sorry I can't offer more than that.

Good luck!

My doctor's English wasn't good enough to explain why he didn't fix my hiatal hernia, but he told me I didn't have it any more. I'm not sure if the band placement shoved the hernia back in place, but I haven't had that awful pain since I woke up from banding. I'm still pain free since band removal, but I never did get the right story from my Mexican surgeon.

My doc fixed mine and voila - no more reflux, etc. But my guess is that yours will not bother you anymore after you lose weight.

Hi Sunta-

My doc did not fix mine either b/c he said it was too small. I had no symptoms from mine though so I wouldn't have known I had one if he had not told me.

I hope you're starting to feel better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
