Hi Everyone,

I am finally scheduled for surgery on May 14th. I am required to do a 2 week 1,000 calorie diet prior to surgery, with nothing after midnight the day before surgery. This concerns me because I hear everyone else saying they do a 2 week liquid diet or at least a liquid diet right before surgery. What was everyone else required to do?

Every surgeon is different. I did the South Beach Super Charge Phase 1. Just follow the instructions and you will be fine. Good luck!

I haven't had surgery yet, but I know my surgeon only requires a liquid diet the day before the surgery. nothing else. It's amazing how different drs have different requirements

I was on a two week pre op diet that consisted of two Protein Shakes a day and two small meals. I had to be on a liquid diet 48 hours prior to surgery only because he didn't want any food in my tummy during surgery. Apparently he has had to hand express solids out before when people had their "last supper"so gross...so I just followed the rules and didn't have any issues.

I went to Thinlife in Sudbury, ON - they require you to be on Optifast for the 2 weeks prior to surgery- -this consists of 4 shakes per day- you are only consuming about 900 calories but they explained that it is to reduce the amount of fat in your liver and help to shrink the liver prior to surgery- it helps put you in better shape before the surgery occurs! I was allowed a few fruits and vegetables daily as well. It wasn't so bad. the first few days as I "detoxed" were tough but they had nutritional support available to me as well. I met with a nutrition counsellor who walked through the stages before and after surgery. I met with her again about a month after surgery, then at 3 months and my last one will be at one year. It has been very useful and helps me to stay on track! Good luck on your journey!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
