Whole Grain Carbs

Recommended Posts

My diet consists of mostly Protein (like everyone here), but I also need some variety. I eat veggies, fruits, and carbs. One of my fave Snacks is eating Triscuit thin crisps with a wedge of laughing cow cheese. I can't eat any bread, so I figured this was a good way to get my whole grains in.

At my appt yesterday, my PA actually got on me about eating them. I didn't understand it. Don't we need whole grains in our diet?? I understand low carb and all, but you still need the good carbs don't you? I don't eat a lot of other carbs either (rice, potatoes). My one carb choice that I can't stay away from is Pasta, but I fix it myself in healthy ways and watch portions.

I just didn't understand the problem with eating Triscuit crackers. It's much better than my old snack of Townhouse crackers, BBQ chips, or Little Debbie snacks.....

I would ask your nutritionist specifically how many carbs you're allowed to have a day, this way you can make your own decisions how to eat them.

For the record, my nutrionist has me eating a minimum of 60g of Protein, no more than 125g of carbs, and no more than 25g of fat daily.

I eat low fat Wheat Thins with Laughing Cow light cheese daily. It hasn't hindered my weight loss at all.

Technically, crackers are considered the "bad for you slider" type food. My doctor thinks carbs are the devil, but my body just functions better with good carbs like whole grains and Beans, and I'm losing weight, which is the ultimate goal, so...

My dietician thinks whole grains are okay, but it is really hit or miss for others.

I don't eat high carb foods, the only ones I eat are in fruit and veggies ( don't eat fruit that much ).. My dietician said no carbs too... She did tell me I could eat quinea ( sp ) since I've done well with losing wt, but I choose to not do it.. I find carbs such as oatmeal, Beans, brown rice, etc all raise my blood sugar, so I don't eat it..

I know they told me no crackers, bread, pitas, wraps, etc. I was allowed to have 2 saltine crackers when I was on mushie foods, but thats it.. I still don't eat them..

Triscuits are not whole grain. They may have some processed whole grains in them, but whole grains are things like:

Bulgur (cracked wheat)

Whole wheat flour

Whole oats/oatmeal

Whole grain corn/corn meal

popcorn

Brown rice

Whole rye

Whole grain barley

Wild rice

Buckwheat

buckwheat flour

Triticale

Millet

Quinoa

Sorghum

Finding whole grain foods can be a challenge. Some foods only contain a small amount of whole grain but will say it contains whole grain on the front of the package.

The closer you are to the grains natural state, the better.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
