Just Banded And Wondering About Liquid Intake...

Recommended Posts

Just had surgery on Thursday, April 5, and stayed over night. I was sent home yesterday with Tylenol-codiene but it was absolutely no help. I've been walking constantly to get rid of the gas pains, but it feels like someone is sitting on my chest making it hard to breathe. The doctor called in a percoset prescription for me and that really helped. I'm worried now that I'm not getting enough Water and fluids. Today I've had about three glasses of water, half a cup of Optifast, and about a third of a cup of Tomato Soup. I also had one sugar free ice pop, all since 7:30. Is this normal, or should I be taking in a lot more liquids? I feel bubbly in my abdomen when drinking water, and sometimes it's a little painful. I'm not even sure how much my new stomach can handle so I'm hesitant to drink too much. Please help!

I was the same way the first couple days. I think my first day home from the hospital I drank maybe 16oz of Water and a sugar Popsicle.

Try to at least sip on Water as much as you can. Just little sips but as often as you can possibly stomach. I found keeping a bottle of water with me at all times helped.

I was banded on a Friday, felt like total crap with bad gas pain that whole weekend, and then Monday night gas pain finally began to let up. By Wednesday that same week I was back to my normal routine and driving my kids to and from school again.

Hang in there, it gets a lot easier and better!

Thanks so much for all the advice! I know that the gas pain will be a memory soon enough, but it really adds to the "what have I done to myself?!" post op mindset, so I just have to keep positive!

I was banded on the same day and you are taking in way more fluids than I. Keep up the good work. Today I had four ounces of Optifast, 1/4 cup Tomato Soup, 1/4 cup Protein Jello, and some Water. I'm just trying to stay hydrated and get a little protein in me.

Congrats on getting banded!!

I have a history of getting dehydrated easily, so I'm super vigilant when it comes to fluids. I just don't want to do any harm by having too much or not enough, but so far so good.

How are you feeling?

Hang in there! This too will pass. As long as you are getting something down you will probably be ok. They pump you full of those fuilds while your in so that you can go a few days with very little to drink. Just keep taking little sips all day long. I remember my doctor telling me it was going to take me 16 hours a day to get all my Water in and that was my #1 job. so sip, sip ,sip

We'll be praying for you

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
