3 Month Post Op And Still Having Occasional Shoulder Pains?

Recommended Posts

When I first had surgery, I kept having these painful shoulder pains. I was told they were from gas build up and then I was told it may be because I ate too much at one time. Now after three months I am still getting the shoulder pain. I will get them even if I haven't eaten anything in hours or had a very light meal or just liquids. It doesn't seem to discriminate. Has anyone had this problem and what did the docs tell you? If it wasn't for the fact that I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol and take meds for them, it wouldn't bother me so much. But I can't help but wonder if that might be part of it, even though I am only 43, my family history has a lot of heart issues, which really concerns me. The doctors tell me I shouldn't worry at my age, but now wth this surgery, I am wondering how will I know what exactly is causing it? The band or something eLSE? Right after surgery I had an EKG, because the pain was so bad, but it came out ok. So I really don't know what to think.

There are a number of people that continue to have shoulder pain ( usually left) . It is thought to be caused by some part of the band or tubing putting pressure or rubbing on the vagus nerve. If you do a search on this site you should find quite a lot of threads about this issue.

Some people seem to manage to live with it whilst for others it can become unbearable and they may need further intervention to help correct it.

i am 26 months out and have struggled with the sholder pain from day one the only way i have gotten it to stop is to get a fill almost to the point of being to tight to get it to stop. it is cause from the band rubbing on the diaphram your dr should have knowen this it is not commond but it does happen. try getting a fill to help keep a little pressure on the band. the solution is it will just stop on its own or get the band respostioned or removed some stops after months and some like mine dont wish i had better news hang in there it will get better a heating pad help a little

I agree it's from the nerve problem. I had it for a while after one particular fill, but it went away completely after the next fill. It was very painful there for a while. Hope yours goes away soon !!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
