Thinking Of Lapband, But Auto Immune

Recommended Posts

hi all,

i am pre-surgery, just starting out in this process... i originally wanted to have a lapband done, but i have an auto-immune problem where my body rejects foreign objects inside it... any ideas?? i am thinking gastric bypass might be where i end up, but i was wondering if anyone on here has had the lapband done and also had any autoimmune issues.. i am on humira and methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.. anyone have any ideas?? thanks!!

Hi, I also have auto immune issues such as mild lupus and RA. Howeverr I made a decision to stop all Rx about five years ago. I chose not to tell my surgeon (not recommended). I was banded in December 2011 and have had three fills and so far so good. Best of luck to you.

I have spinabidfa and hydrocephalus and also have a compromised immune systems. My VP shunt is made of a similar material as the lapband and I have had no issues of rejection. I have had my shunt since was 3 months old. (now 45) I have had it revised or replace but not because of rejection. I've also had 8 spinal fusion and have a lot of hardware in my spine with no issues at all.

Banded July 6 06

Wt. Loss: 156 lbs

I have lupus. My primary care doctor and rheumatologist were both encouraging me to be banded.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
