What Does It Feel Like To Get Food "stuck"??

Recommended Posts

Ok.... I am post op day 8 and finally feeling great. I still have almost no appetite but have been doing the whole full liquids thing. Right now I'm having about 5 oz of Tomato Soup with some townhouse crackers mashed up. Everything is going down great... crackers are very mushy and I'm taking small bites. For all of you more experienced Lap Bandsters.... what does it feel like when you actually get something "stuck"? I'm trying to prepare myself and know what to anticipate lol. Thanks!

I feel this immense pressure in my lower chest (upper stomach?). It pulses sometimes with the contractions of your stoma trying to work the food through. Believe me you will know when you eat too fast/too much and you are becoming stuck. Often you can head it off you really pay attention and stop eating after the first warnings.....but ultimately if (when) you do get stuck you will get through it! (although the first time I was stuck I thought I was going to die....lol but now when I get stuck I just bend over and cough and it comes up).

To me it feels like severe heartburn when I am stuck. I know it sounds weird but someone on here told me they jump up and down and it helps....well I tried it and it worked for me too!

I had my first stuck episode yesterday and believe me, you will know what it is even if you never felt it before. I got a very tight feeling in my chest and stopped eating, then the sliming started. I finally threw up and felt better but still had a residual feeling around my band all day. Ate Tomato Soup for supper and feel fine this morning.

You'll swear that you'll never get stuck but I think it happens to all of us. I have the pain & sometimes I get the hiccups afterwards. I wouldnt be having crackers at this point. You've got a month or so of healing to go.

The crackers were mush by the time I had them or I would've been concerned. I've been sticking with greek yogurt for now to get my Protein in.

When I get stuck or have a blockage it feel like worse pain I have ever felt in middle on stomach. Drinking Water or any kind if liquids make it 10x worse, so my band Dr. told me to take several tablespoons of meat tenderizer and walk as much as possible . This happen only twice in 7 years I have been band. Not sure twice in last 6 mo. I hope its not a sign for something else.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
