How Long Before I Can Start Working Out Again?

Recommended Posts

Got banded on March 7th and was wondering how long before I can start working out again? Do you need to do it gradually? Before surgery I was doing Zumba classes 3-4 times per week. I love it! But it is a lot of movement and I have been scared and moving everything around that much too soon. Any advice?

I believe it is around 4-6 weeks before they recommend doing that type of exercise. Walking would be fine but I would wait a few more weeks to do Zumba. Just my opinion though.

I would agree with JJ above. Walking now is certainly a plus, but I don't even think I felt up to Zumba for like a month. I've only taken 1 Zumba class and it almost killed me! Talk to your doc.

I have never done Zumba so I can't speak to that. I was back at the gym on day 4 doing the treadmill. At two weeks I was back swimming laps (presurgery I was swimming an hour a day/7 days a week.

My surgeon said to wait 6 weeks before doing any type of abdominal workout. I am itching to get back into the classes I usually do...I have 3 more weeks. So walking is what I am doing.

Thanks for all the advice. I will do some walking to start! I go to my dr on Friday so hopefully he can let me know when I can go back to class. Thanks again, I appreciate it!

It is up to your Dr. My Dr. Turned me loose at my one week post op appointment. As I was walking out the door he shouted to me "But take it easy with the weights"

That was it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
