How Does The Protein Shake Pre-Op Diet Affect You Mentally?

Recommended Posts

I'm having my surgery over spring break (I'm a college senior) so that I have some time to feel better before having to get back into life.

Howevvveeerrr. That makes my pre-op diet (Protein shakes only) smack dab in the middle of finals. Being a microbio major taking calculus, cell bio, and organic chemistry this quarter, I really CANNOT have my brain functioning sub-par.

I've tried to research this and have gotten some information, but really, I just need some first-hand stories. I've come across data saying that your mental capabilities are only affected for the first few days as your body adjusts. Has anyone else noticed this to be the case?

I called my nutritionist to see if I could start the pre-op diet early (do 2 weeks instead of 1) so my brain wouldn't be panicking during finals, and she said it would be absolutely fine.

But I'm still worried. I need your help!!!

im one week out on this 2week pre op diet and honestly the first two days were extremely hard for me, but the third day was alot easier! popsicles Tomato Soup Jello etc.. those will help the stomach growls also Water was my best friend lol i think it will be kind of a good thing youll be taking finals during this diet, it will keep you and your mind busy! at times if you feel like its too hard and feel like giving up ask yourself how bad do u want this? i just kept telling myself 14days is a tiny sacrifice to have a happier healthier life! xoxo goodluck! smile.png

I'm on my 12th day of pre-op and days 1 and 2 were horrible. I had a mental meltdown on my 2nd day, but after that it's been basically smooth sailing. At this point, I'm not even phased by everyone around me having "real" food. I just keep telling myself, that this is going to be so worth it in the end, and that makes everything better! I've kept Jello on hand, just in case I felt I needed something extra, and have yet to dig in to the bowl.

Good luck!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
