Post op coughing...okay to take Tussin DM?

Recommended Posts

Please help! :help: I am 5 days post op and have had a bad cough for 3 days and went to the ER this morning to be checked for pneumonia. Good news is no pneumonia per chest x-ray and my lungs are clear. The ER doc said it was okay to take Tussin DM (otc medication) to help control the coughing. It's just viral and my kids have had it too but luckily they seem to be getting better.

I have had some sugar free cough drops and have 1/3 of one at a time and it helps a little. I just hate coughing so hard because I am worried about my band! I am still on liquids and finally getting in enough.

I have read a lot on here, but haven't really posted. I have learned so much here...thanks!

Thanks in advance!

Kell

My doc actually prescribed VicuTuss as my pain reliever after surgery. Basically, that's vicodon with codeine. I would think it would be totally okay.

Hope you get to feeling better soon. Now is not a great time to have a serious cough.

Maybe a quick phone call to your surgeon to make sure that particular medicine is ok?

I'd think you'd want to take something - big coughs can definitely hurt...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
