Does anyone have a really difficult time controlling their acid reflux. I have had my band for 7 years and am about 5 pounds from my stretch goal. In other words I am actually pretty happy where I am if that is possible. I am thinking about loosening my band to see if it will help with the reflux. Has anyone else done this for similar reasons? I exercise regularly and take it very seriously, but sometimes it is really uncomfortable when I am doing a lot of jumping around.

My band is fairly tight, and I've been advised that loosening it might make me feel better. Any one with this experience would be very helpful.

I was banded in Oct '07 and lost 60 lbs, taking me almost to goal. I'd had some issues with reflux pre-band but none afterwards until a couple of years post-band. I then had my fill gradually removed over several months with no luck in resolving the reflux. Due to increased hunger, I was slowly putting on the weight I'd lost, eventually regaining 30 lbs. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, due to other issues, in Mar '11; in May '11, I had it repaired, along with removing and reinserting a newer, more improved (!) band.

My reflux hasn't really healed. I'd started having fills again with my new band, then unfills, again. This past May, my practitioner started me on omeprazole 20mg and gave me a fill since I was over-eating like a piggy. My reflux symptoms disappeared immediately and I've since lost 17 lbs! I have tried, a couple of times, not taking the omeprazole but would have reflux again that very night. I guess it's a trade-off. I'm not crazy about relying on prescription meds but am extremely grateful to not be hungry again and to have begun losing weight!

Regarding my new, improved band: I see a huge difference between it and my first band. I do not pb or burp as nearly as often while feeling sated much sooner, much more noticeably.

As are most of us bandsters, I am a work-in-progress. Good luck to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
