Another Question About Physician Supervised Diet

Recommended Posts

Ok, I've read a lot of threads about the supervised diet, but I'm still a little worried. I go to my family doctor Monday for my first of my nine months, and I am concerned that if I do too well I'll be denied by my insurance company. Has anybody had this happen or know of anyone who has? I'm not worried about getting under the BMI limit since it is so high right now, but I'm concerned that if I do happen to lose, say, 25-30 pounds, my insurance company will say "See, you don't need surgery, you've done so well with this supervised diet!" I would have liked to have done the diet with the bariatric office, but my insurance won't let me because that particular division of the office is not on my provider list.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think so. They have you diet so they can see if your commited to the weight loss. So I would keep going. I started at 262 and am down to 240. But i know dang well that I can't do it all myself. I believe it just shows your commitment. Good Luck!

Well, Like every other diet I have ever been on, I did well for the first few months, then failed miserably. By the end of the 6 months I was almost where I was when In started. I started cheating small here and there, and before you know it......

The reason my insurance co. wanted the supervised diet is to show, on record, that I have pursued every other possible diet and that surgery was/is the next/last option.

If I was committed to weight loss, and successful at "Dieting" then I would not need to go through surgery.

But then, that is just me.

Thank you for the replies. That's the thing - I'm able to lose some weight on my own, but not all that I need to, and I'm not able to keep it off long term. 30 pounds over the course of nine months wouldn't be unheard of for me, but if I were to try on my own to keep it off I would put it back on within a year.

Ask your Dr.s Insurance person that question , just to play it safe.

I lost over 100lbs. on a 12 month diet . 1200 calories a day. But ,,,

I started out at 356, so I was still well overweight.

That makes a difference.

I'm sure that if you loose to much "CHECK YOUR BMI CRITERIA WITH YOUR iNS."

They might try to wiggle out.

I have seen a lot of people loose weight, but then strap on weights over the body,

when getting weighed.

The Dr. has his numbers, and the patient has theirs.

Check with your Dr.'s Office, and see what they say..

Shirley.

Thanks Shirley, I will have to do that. I'm not too worried about losing enough to fall below the criteria for the band. I'm at 370 right now, with a BMI of 58ish, so even if I lost 100 pounds I would still qualify. I don't know if I have the willpower to do that anyway, but who knows...

Congratulations for all your success, by the way. You're doing awesome!

Thanks! I appreciate that...

But I'm still Trying. Everyday is a New Adventure with the Band.

But No! Regrets at all !

They also look at any comorbidities like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. if your BMI is under 40...I think. I was concerned about the same thing since I'm not 100 lbs. over, but I've got a bunch of other things that make me qualified. And besides, even sticking to 900-1200 calories the last month or so, I only manage to lose a pound a month. That's pretty typical for me and that's why I usually give up so easily. And that's also why I decided to try this since nothing else seems to work for me.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
