Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Piper and have been reading this forum for a long time. I'm finally ready to jump in and participate. I just got my financing lined up to get lapband. I've done the yo-yo diet thing for way too long. My BMI is bouncing around just under and just over 35, and I have no major health issues, so my insurance won't cover it. My sister is a doctor (neonatal) and my mom is a nurse practitioner; they (in addition to my husband) are very supportive of me taking this step to have a tool to help me with my weight loss. Over the past couple years I've read everything I can about it...the good, the bad, and the really ugly...and I still feel confident with moving forward. My sister's husband had the RNY, but I'm not ready to take that step. I know there is more after care and maintenance that the band requires, and I am okay with that. I know in my heart that I will not be able to successfully lose and keep it off without intervention and a strong support system. I have the latter, so it is time for the lapband to help me achieve my goals. I'm only 35 years old and have three wonderful young daughters. I don't want to wait until I gain another thirty pounds to start. I can confront this and work hard to lose now. There is no reason for me to wait until I'm another ten years down the road with more health complications. I'm ready to get healthy and maximize my potential for a good quality of life. I have a cnsut with a surgeon picked out for next week. I am an incredibly jumbled ball of nervous and excited. Anyway, hello! I look forward to participating here. Nice to meet you all! Are there any other lower-BMI people started out?

My consult with the surgeon is next Friday. I understand the surgery can be within two weeks of that because I will be self pay, but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet. I'm not sure what requirements he will have for me before he will schedule it.

Nice to meet you both. My BMI was 34 at the time of being banded on December 2, 2011. I go in for my first fill on January 4, 2012. It's great you have a good suport system. I didn't tell anyone. My husband doesn't even know I had he surgery. He feels I should be able to loose the weight with will power. Where do you live in Texas?

I too was self pay, and had my surgery within a week of my first consultation! I did have a higher bmi 39 and diabetes. But when you are self pay most times you do not have to have any of the things that insurance requires (psyc eval, nutritionist, and other stuff) I did have to have an EGD and EKG and then I was in getting banded! Good luck.

Oh my goodness. How in the world have you hide the scars from him and explained the liquid diet? I can't imagine! That's a bummer you haven't been able to have his support.

I live just a bit north of Houston.

Wow- That is so fast! I'm kind of hoping for a fast turn around, if only so I dont sit around obsessing over the waiting!

I am from Houston and am Self Paying for my surgery! I am on my pre-op diet and am scheduled for Sugery Jan 11! I have been trying for 2 years going round and roung with my insurance. They had me pay for a psych eval ($400) and all other kinds of stuff. and three days before my surgery last year I got denied. So I gave up and just said forget it. But I just kept with the yo-yo dieting. So finally my husband said let's just pay for it. You will be healthier and your diabeties will be under control. So here I am, just waiting till wednesday! SO EXCITED!

Hi I'm in VA near TN. BMI is 36, no comorbids. I have BCBS Ins,but surgeon office did pre check and I was turned down. I worry mostly about diabetes as mom, dad, and only sibling have it. My mom and dad are not overweight at all and my sister is only a few pounds overweight. So my questions for those on this sight: would it do me any good to appeal the decision of my insurance, What is the cost if I pay out of pocket?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
