Lap Band Surgery Put On Hold Due To Diagnosis

Recommended Posts

Well, I was hoping to be one the December or January bandster wagon but unfortunately I received news yesterday that I have cancer. Papillary Thyroid Cancer to be exact. I'm going to be having surgery to remove my thyroid and any thyroid tissue as well as some lymph nodes and whatever else the tissue could be touching. I am pretty devastated by this news but at least I stopped crying. I hear it isn't so bad. And since it is my thyroid I was wondering if that is why I have a weight issue and fatigue and stuff and my doctor said no. But that makes absolutely no sense to me since the thyroid controls pretty much everything having to do with metabolism and hormones. But the weight issue should really be the least of my worries. Now I have to find a thyroid surgeon to get this thing going ASAP. It's weird, one day I'm a perfectly healthy 29 year old and the next I am a cancer patient. It feels unreal and shocking. Hopefully it will work out in my favor and I will lose alot of weight once this has been taken care of. And if not, I will be back with a veangance! LOL thanks to everyone for being so awesome and helpful with all of my questions and giving such great advice....you really are a great group of people! <3

Sorry to hear what you are going through :( My surgery was put back because of illness as well and it can be so discouraging but it gave me more positive attitude to kick the illness in the pants and move on to bigger and better things like having the lap band surgery and finally losing weight. Lots of blessings and positive thoughts for you teeth_smile.gif

Best wishes to you during this difficult period. Cancer does not care who you are or where you come from or how old you are. It is a nasty horrible disease and it attacks when and where it wants with no limit to its destruction of the human body.

I believe thyroid cancer is just in a nodule (growth) in an otherwise working gland, but can sometimes spread to the lymph nodes and other tissues. The good news is that papillary cancer is highly treatable. I did not have cancer but did have a nodule that was over producing thyroid hormone. I had radioactive iodine treatment (which you may well have after surgery--it was not a big deal) and now have minimal thyroid activity without medication. I take a thyroid supplement daily, and otherwise live a normal life.

You may be able to work with your endocrinologist to adjust your dosage to maximize your metabolism. I have worked with mine, he keeps me on the higher end of normal as that is where I feel the best. But remember, the higher your thyroid hormone levels run, the hungrier you feel. So, before I had treatment when my levels were running high-I ate to keep up with it and was one of the lucky few who could gain weight while in a hyperthyroid state. That was all before my banding--even before I considered WLS.

I wish you all the best in your cancer treatment. I hope you are through surgery and speeding on to recovery before you know it!

I'm sorry to hear this also... I hope you get better soon! A couple of years ago I had a thyroid cancer scare also.... I went hyper for about 6 weeks TSH at 0, I lost 15 lbs and was fainting and sweating all the time. I had an ultrasound that showed 5 abnormal masses and a giant cyst, so I had a biopsy and that was a tough few days to wait for the results, which were negative. After more tests turns out my thyroid gland just burned out. But my doc did say that if it had to be cancer then thyroid was highly curable, so hopefully yours will respond to treatment and then this will be over soon. Stay strong!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
